GTX 970 vs GTX 980 Which Card Should You REALLY Be Looking At?

MeesterJackson

Ok so let's just get this out of the way now. I know the 980 is more powerful. I'm not dumb ok? Lol

But seriously, let's think about this.

The 980 is honestly a 550 dollar GTX 780 Ti (meaning it's 100 to 150 dollars off from it's current price of roughly 700 dollars) with a decent bit of more features, two of them that are very important are MFAA and drastically less power draw in watts (oh and the 4GB of RAM instead of 3GB).

The 970 is pretty much a 780, however it's 330 dollars (being 170 dollars off) compared to the now 500 dollar but originally 600 dollar 780. This is the bigger sell in my opinion. If you REALLY want more power, then just SLI. The card is seriously not that expensive in terms of higher range GPU's and obviously features the same things as the 980 when it comes to well...features. [insert Bad Joke Here]

So what do you guys think? For the extra roughly 5-20 frames (basing off of Benchmarks I've seen) from the 980 worth it? Or is the 970 (which beats the R9 290 and can catch up to the 290X while being cheaper than both of them) just too darn good of a steal?

What would you really, seriously buy? I'd like to know.

Personally, I think we all know what I'm picking. :P

EDIT: Though I am PISSED the 970 doesn't have a reference model for retail sale, even though tons of pictures have been shown of one and some actually have shown off/own one.

970 is the best price:performance ratio wise, but that's nothing we haven't seen before; the top tier card is never the best option in this regard.

970 is not only faster than the 780, but is also on par and (depending on the game) beats the 780ti significantly.

Let's not forget that release drivers are always about 10-20% slower than those released a few months later.

Once drivers are more optimized, expect future performance gains. It makes me want to sell my 780s and get two 970s, but they're doing just fine at 4K. Dat potential 1.5Ghz core clock doe...

The 970 is VERY appealing. Looking forward for some more benchmarks to come out for it. I know its a stupid idea, but if I can't manage to snag another of the same 780 I have now, I might pick one...probably two...up... ^_^

The 970 is a much better value, and as such is the one I'd prefer. With these super aggressive price points, though, I'm very interested to see what the 960 is going to be like.

Really now? Links? I haven't seen too many of it beating the 780 Ti.

Ah yes, I'd assume it'd have the same if not more performance than a 770 though.

I figured the performance would be around that, but my curiosity is about price. $330 for the 970 blew everyone away. If the 960 comes in around $180-$200, wouldn't that be something?

That would give AMD's new R9 285 some stiff competition. :P

I'm a little worried about the possibility of AMD including an AIO water cooler with the 390/X reference cards though. The 390/X performance better go through the roof, along with it's temps. ;)

It'd better. Though, problem with that is that it'll cost more. Which is what they don't need right now.

It would be only a bit more expensive to get 2 970 but the power difference is immensely better. I think the 970 is the most appealing looking card for anyone to buy right now if you only have something like a 760 or lower. The price to performance is astounding. That from nvidia? Who knew this day would come.

As said, I still think the 980 is a little pricey. It should have been 500 dollars as the rumors said.

I no the 970 is a new card but not the most powerful. will it be powerful enough to play games maxed out in 1080p for a good amount of time with future games. I need a new card and want it to perform great for a long time in the future. What are yall thoughts?

The 980 pricing seems great, until you look at the 970 at almost half the price and not much less power....like....what?

I am getting a Zotac 970. I pick it up tomorrow. I am very anxious. The price is amazing for the performance that has been listed.

You can't be serious.  Hyperthreading is a market joke?
