Android Wear (Moto 360/...) working with tablets. Does it work?

I am interested in buying an Android Wear device like the Moto 360, LG G watch R, or the Asus Zenwatch but I do not have a phone. I haven't had a phone for over 2 years now. I do however have a Nexus 7 tablet that will connect to the device and I want to know, if I am using the fitness tracking apps do I need to have a phone to have the data synced while bicycling or exercising? Is it truly necessary for me to get a phone to use the device? I probably won't need full functionality of it, I just want the fitness tracking and the watch part, mainly.

You want to spend $200-$400 for a fitness tracker with bad battery life?

I think carrying a nexus 7 around in your pocket is going to quite unwieldy....why not get an phone?

OR.. get a bluetooth fitness band, some of them even tell the time

@mvitkun--I understand about the battery life of these devices. I haven't made up my ind on one of them yet. I don't want just a fitness tracker, I know I am going to be using the watch for more than that but that is what I am interested in right now.

@ShadowCaptain--I ride a bike to work so the tablet is in my back pack.  I use VOIP for my phone through the tablet, why pay for phone service when there is abundant WIFI access? I have considered the Razer Nabu band but the watches are able to do more and they have my interest.

I cannot rely on wifi enough to be without my phone, I like to have 3g for spotify in my car/motorbike, as well as internet anywhere I go, car, train, walking in town, etc etc etc,

But that is your choice, personally the cost of my contract is insignificant
