GTX 780ti or GTX 980?

TTurnerdudEE

Should people (When the 980 is released) buy discounted 780 ti's (assuming this is the case to get rid of old stock) or save up and buy the new 980?

I have been thinking about this heavily and cannot reach a verdict,

Any thoughts?

In general, regardless of price drops, don't get a 780ti: chances are the other cards will drop too if the ti does and they will almost certainly be a better option.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

I heard that 980 are not the cards replacing the 780Ti but they will be replacing the 780 !

So you should not be waiting for 980s as there wont be much discount on them like ther would be on the 780s ......

since i believe AMD has nothing now

very high chance of AMD  setting the 290 at a really low price  (like what happened during the 3xxx era)

Maybe not much. But nvidia will significantly drop their price when amd release cheaper card for the tier.

wait for the 980 see what the performance is like and the price then compare it with the 780ti to see if it is much of a difference.

If they replace the GTX 780 but use the GTX 780 Ti's price bracket I'm not buying any of their cards this launch

1) Wait till launch, we know nothing more than you do. We are not psychic, educated responses need to be formed by benchmarks.

2) If you don't need to, don't buy anything just yet. Wait until AMD releases something in response, with any luck prices will drop.

3) Personally I recommend neither, go pick up an R9 295x2 while its still on sale.

Nvidia never discounts a product; they always discontinue and replace in the same price/performance bracket. Then, 3GB of Video Memory won't be as future proof as 4GB (otherwise why is the 980 going to have 4GB?). To top that off the 980 will utilize better color compression and larger cache memory on a 256bit bus, which makes them a lot cheaper to produce but might still have performance setbacks.

If I had my heart set on it, I still would not buy a 980 until at least a week or two after launch, when proper testing and comparisons are available.

Get GTX 980. It's cheaper and will most likely beat or be = to 780Ti's performance... 175W means VAST OC headroom. 970 is the one beating 780...

depends on what u are going to use it for if it is for a single 1080p screen u are way fine if ur thing about running 1440p or multiple displays it would be nice for the extra power

Multiple displays , @ 1080 x 1920

My logic was that if it performance is similar to the 780 ti don't bother as it will likely be more expensive but apparently it will not out perform the 780 ti so I'm thinking just buy a 780 ti which could possibly have a reduction in price over time (From re-sellers)  trying to move older stock,

I would just go with the EVGA GTX 780Ti SC w/ ACX http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GMTGJIU. The price has already come down about as much as it will and is a pretty fair price to pay for the performance it puts out.

I would wait for performance benchmarks as no one knows how the architectural improvements affect the card so i would wait

IF the GTX 980 out-performs GTX 780 Ti then Nvidia will have no choice but to lower the prices. Nobody in their right minds would want them otherwise. Every series we see price drops on older cards, though sometimes it takes a month or 2. I have a pretty good feeling about some very significant price drops on the 700 series. The 900 series will also have so much more going for it. Less power, less heat, less noise...the most important question is HOW MUCH $?! We will know on the 19th!

Some GTX 780 Tis have already dropped in price the last few weeks, I doubt they will drop even further and might even climb back up a little, especially if the 980 turns out to be slightly less powerful than the 780 ti and has an MSRP of 599.99 (US), as is now being reported on a couple sites.

I've been holding out on getting a GPU until the 980 is released in case it offers some ground breaking performance or is priced super cheap. If the latest rumors are true and it turns out neither is the case im probably going with an r9 290x(hopefully the 980 would result in a drop in 290x prices but I doubt it, but they are still a better price performance deal if the 599 price and sub to equal 780ti performance for the 980 is true.

780ti of course for outright power. On what little over read, and heard on the wan show, the 980 won't be as powerful as the 780ti, so price would be the only factor that would change that for me.

Power consumption is a moot point, if it gets to the stage where I have to run my PC on a petrol generator then I'll be happy with the badassery factor. Plus I'm biased as I have a 780ti already.
