Looking for decent speakers.

So I've been growing into a bit of an audiophile over the last few years. I'm constantly on the lookout for better sound, but I haven't really had the budget to invest in anything extreme. I don't have a ton of money right now, but I'm hoping to build a better sound system bit by bit.

I'm currently using a hand-me-down JVC stereo receiver connected to my desktop, along with a powered sub and two crappy Philips stereo speakers that were once part of my eldest sister's 5.1 stereo (because for some reason, somebody thought those were a good idea...).

It sounds okay for now (and it was free, so I guess I can't beat the price/performance ratio there), but I would like to upgrade my system over time. I'm not looking for anything super expensive. I would just like to generally have a decent system. I'm hoping to get new everything. A 5.1 receiver, as I mostly use my PC to play music, games, and watch movies, so I would like to have all bases covered.

I also plan on getting a turntable at some point, because who doesn't want to have a record collection?

But, to start off, I was looking for ideas on speakers themselves. I can buy speakers and a sub separately... especially with the way Newegg sells gear. My brother recommends Klipsch and said he doesn't like Polk. This is coming from his experience as an employee at an old stereo shop, but that ended over a decade ago, and the fields may have changed.

So... to any of you out there who have used multiple brands recently... what would you recommend and why?

"A picture is starting to form here... I wonder if it's accurate? Some pieces don't quite seem to fit. Or maybe I just don't like the way it looks."

Yeah that's... not happening. lol

As I said, I would like to buy bits and pieces over time. I'm just looking for some monitors at the moment. My budget is around the $200-$300 range for this part.

Polk is fine, I'd steer away from Klipsch.

don't bother with 5.1, buy two good stereo speakers.

Thanks. Though I've always enjoyed surround for movies, and it's fun for games as well.
