Locked 4690K!

Go to solution Solved by Trogdor8freebird,

Also, try the + sign on the num pad to try to increase the cpu ratio. My motherboard sorta works like that.

I can't overclock my 4690k!

About two weeks ago I got the 4690k and MSI Z97 Gaming 3 (was a bundle)
I started off with the stock Intel fan as I was tired from removing my old mobo and putting this one in. Re-installed windows to my boot drive and went on my way.
As I got my new optical drive today I figured why not put in the Evo 212 cooler at the same time and then I can start to OC.

Install everything fine and booted into the bios and went to overclock but it seems I can't change the multiplier on the chip.

Then I remebered I still have the stock bios version (v2.0) so I go and download the latest (v2.3) and update it. Pop it in the usb and reboot to bios again and use the m-flash and do it. Went to 100% then the pc just stayed with a blank screen for ca 5 minutes until I rebooted manually. Got into the bios, still reads v2.0 and the 4690k is still locked.

What gives? I'm quite afraid I'll brick the mobo if I try to update the bios again.

In the patch notes for the v2.2 BIOS it says "Adjust OC Genie setting to have better performance with Haswell-Refresh K and processors."Should I try that one instead?

CPU ratio is at auto maybe  :P?

Change the CPU Ratio.

@Suoerz

The thing is that only options inside "[ ]" are clickable. Can't click CPU Ratio with mouse and change it from auto to manual.

Make sure OCgenie is disabled, and you havent pressed the auto OC button that some gigabyte motherboards have.

I'm fairly sure if you have the OC genie auto OC enabled it will not allow you to change the 'auto' to 'manual'

If it's on the button the top left glows red.

This is just the default setting.

When Cpu ratio is highlighted, what happens when you just type a number? As thats how MSI bios' work.

That BIOS looks extremely friendly compared to the gajillion options in the Gigabyte BIOS. Apparently you can control the fans through it, although exactly HOW still eludes me lol.

I'm at 4.4Ghz with 1.175v at the moment. Stresstest for 10 min shook it up to ~68-70c. Going to try and settle at 4.4 and back the voltage a little bit! :)

Only got a Hyper Evo 212 at the moment, maybe going to get H80i later.

with an EVO pretty good :) My 3570K @ 4.5 gets to about same temps with Seidon 120M.

I have a G3258 @4.5GHz that gets to around 70 with a Seidon 120V.

You will be good to go with an H80i :)

  • 1 month later...

i'm a bit late to the party and dont know if you already have it fixed. but, i have the same chip and also have an msi z97-g55. where it says auto for the cpu ratio, move your cursor over that and time in the multiplier you want to start at. then F10 to save and reboot. I honestly think the mobo isnt that great. i black screened trying to go up to 4.4Ghz. ( stable at 4.3) If you still are having trouble, i hope this helped!
