A Respectful Rant Concerning Slick and the WAN Show

CenTexBU

You are angry that someone on the internet has an opinion that is different than yours?

Run far, run fast.

The WAN Show is Weekly Analysis and News, if something related to politics happens, they can comment on it. It isn't limited to tech news. (even though it primarily is)

If you don't like the content, then don't watch it.

You can't stop them expressing their opinions just because you don't like it.

I got sent to prison after following Linus' instructions to #Makebombs

I get kinda miffed at the WAN show when they make comments like this as well. I just dislike how it's "cool to make fun of Americans". Especially considering that Slick is part American. I get that they are entitled to their opinion, it just seems like they never have anything nice to say about us, and it kinda hurts.

And I'm sorry but if we're gonna keep score on stupid things done, and vacations taken, obama has surpassed bush in every way.

Thay being said, I could honestly care less about whether or not Iraq had WMD's, he was a dictator who murdered and enslaved people, and he needed to die, same with the guy currently in charge of N korea, same with the leader of Cuba, etc.

Some of us do, maybe I get tired of people not from my country using my politicians as a joke, why not use your own? We get tired of always being the butt of everyone's joke you know. Yet if any of us makes a joke, like I did a while back when I said "Mexico has laws?" I got reported.

Of course I'm not angry that someone has an opinion other than mine.  I addressed this in my original post.  As previously stated, I specifically said that I completely understand when politics is mentioned in the context of technology that has public policy implications -- that is to be expected and more than okay.  The only thing that bothers me is that I have to listen to snide comments that aren't the least bit germane to the conversation (as the Bush comment was).  I deal with this kind of thing day in and day out, and I'd simply like to enjoy a tech based blog that's politics free.

You know how irking it is when a politician starts talking about technology they clearly don't understand?  It's very similar.  I'm not saying Slick doesn't know what he's talking about, but I'll say that I would trust what he says about technology far more than I would American politics.

Agreed completely. It irritates me alot when people from other countries call us uncivilized for not having "free" (it's not free) health care. When half the time they don't realize that it isn't free, and that they pay for it with every paycheck, whether or not they go to the doctor.

Slick and Linus should stick to gaming and tech. Although things get a bit grey when the NSA rears it's ugly head.

Making jokes is easy.  Everyone seems to make broad generalizations on the internet.  The fact that there is a lot more nuance than the jokes would imply seems to be unimportant to most, but it fosters this perception that the generalization is reality -- it is not.  The reality is that all of Bush's vacations were 'working' vacations.  He used the ranch to host world leaders, economic summits, and major foreign policy decisions were made while he was supposedly on vacation.  Agree with it or not, Slick's joke implied Bush was kicking back somewhere letting the country run itself.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

There was also Slick mentioning that he watches 'The Young Turks.'  TYT is political porn for the American left.  It may make them feel good, but it's ultimately meaningless.

regardless of anyones opinions on bush or any politician for that matter, the WAN show is somewhat informal.

And i think they are trying to keep politics out of the show already. So i dont think they can actually get much less political.

Really, americans feel that they are being made fun off now?  The one nation under god,  The home of the brave, is being bullied now?

Also that thing with the mexico joke is part of the problem, americans are somewhat known (at least where i live) for making fun of others. But cant take a joke about their great nation themselves.

My point was that I got reported for making a joke about mexico, but everyone constantly harshes on my country, I don't mind jokes, but don't get bent out of shape if I come back at your country when you make fun of mine, thats what my issue is. And you are right, they do try (it seems) to keep politics out of it because they know what a toxic and polarizing subject it is.

the underdogs will always be defended. unless Americans suddenly consider themselves the underdogs of the world (health, safety, education, economy, power, luxuries, food, shelter etc.), then Americans will continue to be poked and prodded, just like the rest of us that have first world problems.

Another term I hate, "first world". Most of the problems in the "3rd world" are caused by the people there (warlords and the like), so why don't the people there just stand up and stop taking shit from them? We did it, we were nothing but "farmers with pitchforks" and we took on the worlds super power at the time and won. Don't get me wrong I'm all for helping people, but you have to do something to help yourselves.

Take Iraq for an example, the toppled their regime for them, trained there police force, game them weapons and equipment, and what happens as soon as we leave? They let Isis pretty much take over. All these "3rd world" nations need to start standing up for themselves, start fighting back, even if the situation is unwinnable. "better to die on your feet than live on your knees".

Granted we did have help from France in our revolution, but if i remember correctly all they ended up doing was cutting off the British escape route at the very end.

That's an interesting take on the situation.

TYT is pretty bad. Opinions first, facts if they suit our opinions!

As always with political extremists.

And that's what I've gathered from what I've heard on the news. I mean it is somewhat true, we trained and equipped them, then we leave, and they get toppled in a few days. So.... why did we help them in the first place if they don't have the balls to stand up and fight to the last man for their right to rule themselves? Just seems like a lot of people in the world just want to be helped without having to do any actual work themselves.

You are taking him to task as if he were a learned political student such as yourself, you should have the ability to just ignore such comments as they are and will always be such a tiny minority part of LMG's content that it's not even worth discussing IMHO.

Creating a political debate here will solve nothing, Yes TYT is horrible but perhaps you should have PM'd some sound reasons as to why and put it to Slick in a PM or something and speak with him on the matters you are concerned with if he is willing, rather than calling him out as a political idiot and bashing him for a tiny part of his otherwise stellar act in front of the whole forum.

That's a fair criticism; although, I never said he was an idiot.  Slick strikes me as highly intelligent -- simply misguided.  I'm a long time viewer, but I'm new to the forums.  Contacting him directly just never occurred to me.  I'd love to have a private political chat with him, but I highly doubt he has the time or desire for that!

You are harsh but fair.

I'm also from Texas and not exactly a Bush supporter (personally I think he is better off as someone to hang out with vs being president, but I feel the same for Obama as well), I'm respectful of how calm this rant of yours is. Since Obama is on his second term and we're getting a new president all together soon-ish, I find it kinda silly to still being worked up over ex president Bush in some way.
