A Question. If one was to completely erase everything, all drivers etc. from the pc, and restore the windows install back to what you have at the absolute first boot up after installation, what would be wrong with migrating? Is it because of the way HDD's write randomly or something?

Well you can migrate (duplicate existing HDD) to other drive. Why we say he should do fresh install he will get general speed boost from clean install, it will not carry any bogus shit from windows registries or other places. And sometimes migrating from HDD to SSD can cause some issues that something stopped working.

It would be easier to go with a clean install on you SSD

It's NOT always easier to do a clean install.......

Some people hate doing the driver/software malarky, and those uninitiated can do things in the wrong order, causing more problems.

People don't know how easy it is to clone, WAY less than an hour and your back to normal booting into windows on your new drive.

Without having to do drivers, software and tools.

Partition Wizard is Free

Has a copy button, choose source drive (C:) choose target drive (D:\)

Apply

Reboot, it will copy a 1:1 ratio and then you restart, go into bios, set SSD to boot drive, go into windows and format your other drive.

Takes less than 2 mins to start, wait for copy, , done, bios change boot drive and ur in Windows on the SSD.

TBH - I have a spare drive, I might make a quick tutorial tomorrow for this program, as its really childs play to use.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

No, but if you clone the HDD to the SSD, you wouldn't need to install the OS onto the SSD as its already there,.. with your programs and whatever was there before.

Like a mirror image, you just have to tell the bios to boot from the SSD when your done.

is there a way to make it so my hdd that has the os on to be formated to keep everything except the os and just put my os on my ssd

Usually no..

Because programs use the registry and other area's of windows in the background to work (99% of em)

Installing windows to the SSD, and deleting the Windows folder on the HDD, won't make your programs work.

You'll need to re-install them. (Hence why cloning is good for some who hate that)

But 2tb onto 128GB, yeah not gunna happen..

Best bet, write down software your using, and prepare to reinstall them on the SSD/HDD afterwards.

this is not worth it. I spent days trying to get the boot loader repaired after pushing an image from the HDD to the SSD (unless you are really good with BCDedit)

actually i did it today and it was simple

I just made a restore-usb then i cloned my OS after that it (as always) didn't booted from the ssd so i disconnected all other hard drives and started my usb as a Hdd-Usb from the boot menu, restored my system and it works just fine !!!

so with a bit of preparation no problem and as you already have the problem just boot from your old hard drive and make a recover USB/DVD

Hi,

I did the same a little while ago, It is totally less painful to copy off anything you need from the old disk, blow it away, do a fresh install on the SSD then you can then put the stuff you need back on the old HDD and use it as a mass storage device in the PC.

The other thing is a friend of mine used some clone software that came with his SSD and it not only failed but it currupted the origional HDD aswell, thankfully it was all backed up but there are to many driver based dependencies for me to trust cloning lol plus clean installs are great for speed gains and for apealing to my neat freak side!

lol  I know all this has been said but it is totally the best way!
