Running 1440p at 120hz with HDMI to displayport cable

HyperLime
Go to solution Solved by Glenwing,

Thanks, that actually helps. So I would be able to run 1080 120hz using a signal converter box? (DVI graphics card to DP monitor).

Yes, but they are quite expensive.  You need a DP to Dual-Link DVI converter.

Hi

I am planning to purchase the new Asus Swift monitor to he able to run at 1440p 120hz (also want the option to go up to 144hz) however my graphics card only has an HDMI input and the monitor only has a displayport input. So:

1. How do I get that resolution and refresh rate with what I have? (use an hdmi to displayport cable??)

2 . Since I am planning to sell my graphics card and only rely on my CPU for graphics in the future to upgrade, would I be able to achieve this resolution and refresh rate using say an hdmi to displayport (bare in mind I have an hdmi input on my motherboard)

I am only confused as 1440p at 120/144hz is something new for me and I can't find anything else online.

Regards,

You need a displayport gpu. No orther way. HDMI sucks.

You won't get 1440P 120HZ, if you only have a HDMI port on your GPU then it is probably not powerful enough to run 1440P 120HZ anyways

HDMI can only support 1440P 60FPS

My GPU also has a DVL, how about a Dp to dvi convertor?

no. dp. you need nvidia gpu with dp for the g-sync.

I am not concerned about G sync for now. I just want to run 1440p at 120 or even 1080p at 120 surely? I have dvi and hdmi on my GPU

VGA, HDMI, DVI they don't have enough bandwidth for 1440p 120hz.

What GPU do you even have right now?

Gtx 560 Ti. Selling it and ordering possibly Gtx 880 Ti later on

Can DVI/HDMI be converted to DP via adapter?
  • DVI-DL does not have the bandwidth to support 2560 x 1440 at 144 Hz.
  • We do not recommend using an HDMI to DP adapter as this is not qualified or supported in Nvidia drivers

Why are you so focused on 120-144hz? It's not even that important. I'd rather have 1440P 60HZ.

Why the hell did you buy this monitor?

880 ti won't be released anytime soon. And I don't think a single 880 will be able to push 120 fps on 1440p. You're likely going to need 2 of them.

Yes true, but I am willing to wait a few months, not in a hurry.

880 will be released in like 2-3 months but 880 ti is wayyyyy farther away. I'm guessing 6 months and that is a very rough guess. Also we have no idea of how well they actually perform until it comes out. Usually the ti is only slightly better than the non-ti anyway so I don't think a single 880ti will be enough either.

Yep, that is true. But I just want a really good monitor, and this is it for me. The only game I play is pretty much CS, which requires very little in terms of GPU. But I want that 120hz at least for the time being.

Upon further reading on other forums, apparently it is possible to run 1080p at 120hz using a DVI-D to DP adaptor. I could be wrong however.
