i5 or i7?

Go to solution Solved by MrImnotMLG,

Since you do some video editing I'd take the i7.

Hi guys so I'm considering moving to intel soon however i'm not sure whether to get an i5 4690k or the i7 4790k. I will mainly be using the rig for gaming, with some light video editing and rendering.

I'm intending to crossfire 7950s soon too (I already have one) and so my main question is would the i5 bottleneck the two cards or could it handle them?

CPU: Intel i7 4790k @ 4.0 GHz Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Motherboard. GPU: EVGA GTX 970. Ram: Crucial Ballistix Ram 8GB (2 x 4gb) @ 1600MHz CPU Cooler: H80i Water Coller | Case: Fractal Design Define R5 PSU: Corsair CX 750m HDD: Seagate 2TB Hardrive | SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 120 GB.

I would get the i7 if you can because games are getting more CPU intensive, like Star Citizen

If you're only using this machine to game, the i5 is fine.

If you're going to do any video editing, the i7 is a massive improvement thanks to that hyper threading.

This is because:

Games don't really benefit from more than 4 cores or hyper threading.

However video rendering programs can really take advantage of the extra cores or threads.

Yeah I guess it makes sense to go for the i7, the 8 threads would help with upcoming next gen games (witcher 3 i'm looking at you) :)

Well I do editing rendering as I have/work on 3 youtube channels :) I guess the i7 is the best choice, I was just hoping to save some money :P

Unless you're short on money i7. As games start to become more multi threaded, you'll have less problems running games later on.

They're starting to, and every year Intel is pushing really hard for companies to use more cores.

OP - I'd go with the i7 if you don't plan to upgrade often as @AlwaysFSX said. I still have a 2700k in my desktop, and it still performs perfectly fine.

Definitely, and it won't be long until we see games really benefit from hyperthreading/more cores.

Be sure to overclock :)

Of course, I will be getting a h80i which should allow me to hit 4.2ghz easily enough :)

Yeah I don't want to upgrade my CPU for at least three years :)
