Why does my desktop keep going black?

Has anyone ever experienced this?  I normally have a wallpaper but lately it's been disappearing and my background has turned black.  There were also black squares around icons on my desktop and if I moved them around on my original desktop wallpaper it would create a black square where it went.  

Case: NZXT H500i. Motherboard: Asus Prime Z390-A. CPU: i7 9700k OC @ 5.0GHz. GPU: EVGA 2080 FTW3 CPU Cooler: NZXT X62. Memory: G. Skill Ripjaws 32Gb 3200mhz. Storage: 1TB Samsung 840 EVO SSD /  120GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD  /  WD Caviar Black 3TB / WD Caviar Green 4TB. . PSU: Corsair AX760. Monitor: 2x Acer XB270HU. Keyboard: Corsair K70 RGB. Mouse: Corsair Glaive.

what gpu do you have I had this problem and just did a clean driver install and it solved it :D

When was the last time you did a clean isntall?

Cause once you go black you never go back

 

On a more serious note, make sure that you have correct graphics drivers, and that your OS is a genuine install.

780ti.  You know, I just installed the new Nvidia driver and that's when it started.  That must be it!

780ti.  You know, I just installed the new Nvidia driver and that's when it started.  That must be it!

I had some problems this morning and I updated last night to the new nvidia driver

I think it might be the new Nvidia driver that came out.  Now that I think about it that's when it started.

I think it might be the new Nvidia driver that came out.  Now that I think about it that's when it started.

Downgrade then to the one where everything worked :)

Probably GPU driver and in Windows 7 if you don't activate your OS the wallpaper will go black all the time.

 

Wait, what?  I have Windows 8.1 pro.  How do I do what you just mentioned?  Sorry, I'm still getting used to Windows.

If it started after the driver update, then it's probably the driver acting goofy. Roll back to the last one that worked.
