My guess is that they want to attempt and close the gap between their different OS. More than likely they want to make the experience you have on  Windows, Xbox, and Windows phone be as seamless as possible.

xD Who cares? Some customersheeps will still buy it no matter how bad it is because it's microsoft branding. Right now Win 8.1 is so bad that hardware companies must label their products if they are compatibly with this pile of c...

I think they are trying to introduce more open source projects like their windows 8 app store so they can get royalties without having to hire such a big skilled workforce to come up with new and innovative ideas.

 

Microsoft already pioneered bing awhile back, made search deals with Yahoo! and Facebook and tried out the Zune MP3 Player and failed at bringing the Nokia up to speed.

 

I give them credit for trying to compete and bring new ideas to thriving markets, but I feel giving freelance developers the chance at making things will be their ultimate success.

Microsoft said that they're going to combine windows, windows phone and xbox into one ecosystem based around the same user experience, almost like the same OS on every device.

So a lot of you are suggesting a unified is but I think that its a little late. And they will destroy them selves in the process. Apple had the idea from the start, so it works for them they have their own ecosystem.
