Why do SandForce SSD controllers have a bad reputation?

Askew

Its supported, but you need a compatabile chipset and latest storage drivers.

I believe Z/H7x series chipsets support it.

It is not supported by the SSD controllers to be able to compress data across two different media in this case. I'm sorry but you're just plain misinformed and misinforming people here.

This is the first storage thread in a very long time (if ever) to go HOT

I'm enjoying watching this debate a lot.

Great, the 730 is maybe the only drive to calim to have it all, but as we all know, sandforce does not implement TRIM correctly in the first place. Next inane post trying to deflect from reality: all SSDs now except the 850 Pro are flawed in one way or another?

We're talking marvell here and they ain't doing no compression at all.

You're the one, who is misinformed (or rather not up to date).

What controller does intel 730 use? The spec sheet says Intel controller but nothing more.

I'm completely up to date and it's the entire point of TRIM. Compression is not solely about keeping all data. It's about keeping all relevant data. TRIM is a lossy compression scheme in the strictest definition. And SSDs are still either missing controller functionality to deal with TRIM in a RAID 0 or 6 setting or they are missing full-disk encryption.

It's a modded Sandforce II.

Every piece of silicon is flawed one way or another. Samsung is no exception here. But some are so severe, that actually affect the user experience (nobody likes bsods)...

Again buddy, you need to check your facts. Trim is not a compression scheme, its simply a command to tell the ssd, something is invalid and its ready for erasure.

So what is it?

Its actually intels inhouse controller taken from their DC series (and overclocked a bit to achieve higher iops).

Intel didn't build anything off sandforce. Sandforce is completly closed "source" and no one (even mighty intel) is doing a variation of their silicon.

Intel 730 is all Intel made (as it's evident from performance consistency and no compression at all).

BWAHAHAHA! Intel 520 ring a bell? You've proven to be a moron on a power trip. The 730 is a revision of the 520 with a revised Sandforce II controller. Sandforce is only as closed source as Intel's engineers allow it to be.

Nope. We were discussing 730 and thats made off their enterprise controller. Obviously their 53x and 33x series are sandforce made (pretty much reference sandforce design). But we're not discussing these drives now, are we ? :P

If you think the 730 is anything more than a revision of the 5xx series you're not well-informed. Intel built everything from a Sandforce base. The only thing enterprise-grade is their silicon. The controller was built off of sandforce II and it shows.

No its not and i have a feeling you're on a trolling spree.

(its pretty much evident from all reviews, that intel indeed used their own controller)

Which reviews have you been reading?! Even anandtech alludes to the great similarities in their review and the huge slowdown with TRIM enabled very much akin to Sandforce II.
