nice 8gb in a single die package. 16gb on one module with only 2 chips is cool

By putting 8GB on a single chip, this greatly increases the capacity of DDR3 ram.

a single DIMM has 7 chips, so this DDR3 ram could theoretically have 8*7=56GB per DIMM.

Sadly regular desktop processors are limited to 32 or 64GB of ram, and with the new DDR4 standard coming in a couple months, more innovation will be speed and latency rather than more capacity.

I think server ECC DIMMs exist with 32 or 64GB per stick already...

You can't. Ram sticks that have let's say 8GB of memory on them, have usually 8 or 16 individual chips on them. So now we could have up to 128GB of DDR3 on a single stick. This has been done already with DDR4 though. http://www.pcper.com/news/General-Tech/SK-Hynix-Develops-128GB-Stick-DDR4-RAM

What's the point of developing an 8gb module for ddr3 ram, did't linus say in his recent tech quickie vid that ddr4 would have 8gb per modules

It's 8 Gigabits, not Gigabytes.  In other words, 1GB chips.  This is just an incremental improvement, we've already been making 4Gb (0.5GB) chips for some time now.

yeah, that article is very misleading, it's 1GB, or 8Gbs.... bits and bytes in the difference
