Hello all, after months of having my new Intel build, I figured it was time to overclock. I have OC'd to 4.4 GHz on a i5-4670K and I am curious as to what is next. I believe that would be stress testing, amirite? How would I go about that? CPU is being cooled with a Corsair H100i.

Try Prime95 and AIDA64 and see what your temps are. Adjust accordingly. You could be able to go higher if your temps allow.

Prime 95, for about 15min, see how your temps are, stability, and try according to that to Go even higher ( if you feel like it ) or lower

So just DL and run and go to dinner and check back after? What kind of temps should I be looking for?

Well, run it for 10 minutes at least while monitoring temps to make sure they're not too high. I would say anything below 80C is good. You're fine under 90C, but that's a little too hot for comfort for me.

Don't use any of the programs listed above ^^^

They are specifically coded to create excessive amounts of heat that your intel CPU wan not intended for. This can lead to damage to the CPU.

Use the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility that is engineered by intel to properly stress test your CPU without causing damage.

will this cause my computer to blue screen? Prime95 did and I'm not worried that it will happen again. I am a complete noob when it comes to overclocking.

Haswell has problems with Prime95 and various other benchmarking softwares. The Intel utility should be fine, and if it does indeed BSoD, that's a sign that it's not stable in the first case. :P

No it shouldn't blue screen, but your max temps will be much higher than they will ever be when running at 100% on a regular computer program. This can mislead you to think that you should stop pushing the CPU because it gets too hot, but that is only because of youre using prime95 or some other program. Using IETU will give you a more accurate maximum temperature, so you have more overclocking headroom.

Sigh...they can't damage an Intel CPU because it immediately throttles at 90C. What they can show is your stability and how well your thermal solution works under the theoretically worst situations.

No. That is above the worst theoretical situations. Linus talked about this before on several livestreams...

After DLing this and my PC blue screens again, do I lower the speed? If so, by how much?

Do not leave your computer while stress testing.  Most importantly, before running any kind of stress test, set your voltage to manual/constant.  The blue screens could be caused by leaving your voltage at adaptive and not setting it to manual/constant while stress testing.  When you are done stress testing, then return voltage to adaptive.

Prime95, AIDA, etc.. whatever you use, set voltage to manual/constant.

Your overclock isn't stable drop it down in steps.

You shouldn't be bluescreening if its stable especially with intels tool set.

Ran a stress test provided by Intel for 10 minutes and it said I passed. Highest temp was 75 degrees celcius. So I guess this means I am good and stable on a 4.4GHz OC?

One stress test is not the end-all, be all, but also don't feel the need to run through every single stress test available to declare stability.  Different applications and games will have different requirements.

If your temperature is below 85C at load then increase the vcore voltage by .05v

If your temperature is 85C or above then lower the clock speed by 100mhz and test again.

That is terrible advice.

If your temperatures are below 85C, you're good.  If you want to try and get lower temperatures, slowly lower the Vcore until you do experience a blue screen, then go back to the last stable Vcore, and that is your best result for that specific multiplier.

Do you realize the inherent contradiction here? If Prime95 is capable of producing that heat via extended numerical calculations (and by the way it's just a multithreaded prime number calculator using the most efficient algorithm we have) then there can exist a problem which may demand the instructions used therein. Linus is by no means an expert on programming or algorithms. His knowledge about tech is broad and even in-depth in some cases, but programming? He's less than a novice on what some problems require to be solved. Finding prime numbers is an NP-Complete problem. there is no efficient (polynomial time solution) I think we've gotten it down to 1.6^n where n is the maximum number of bits.

Did you not read what I quoted? >.<

He said IF HIS PC CRASHES AGAIN

This means his clock speed is too high or voltage is too low.

If he is below 85C then he can increase the voltage to make the frequency stable, because he has thermal headroom.

If he is already at 85C he shouldn't increase the voltage because that would increase the temps. He should instead lower the clock speed until it is becomes stable.
