I dont see why not? It would look pretty sweet too! Just be careful and it probably isnt too good for it if you mess up so be exact...

I'd go with acrylic paint from a hobby shop and brush it on. Might want to mask it all off and cut out the hexagons that you want to paint just to be safe, but it would be doable without that.

I'd ask @Hanoverfist for 'professional painting tips,' if I may. 

But taking it from a n00b that still uses spray cans, It would
seem very possible to mask out a couple hexagons and do
it yourself with a can.

Use enamel or acrylic paints and you can use a think paint rod or a toothpick like tool to flow the paint into the hexagons and get a really smooth finish on them, it will take some patience to paint them.
