If you can't wait, the i5-4670k. I own it and I love it! However, I would suggest getting the i5-4690k instead. :)

For gaming: i5-4690k or i5-4670k

You can pick them up at Microcenter in-store for $200(4690k) // $189(4670k).  If you don't live near a Microcenter, you can use Staples.com price match feature to get these processors shipped to you.  If you go the Staples route, you will have to either call them up, or talk to someone through live chat on their website.  The i5-4690k won't be available until June 25th at the earliest.

What is your primary use for the machine?  Without knowing more, its hard to make an exact recommendation.

My friend needs a new motherboard because of RAM limitations (2GB DDR2), and he decided to get the ASUS Maximus VI Hero LGA1150 board. So then he reached out to me for a recommendation for a good LGA1150 CPU, and I couldn't really help him with that, since I have a i7-3820 LGA2011 CPU. He's going to be gaming quite a lot, so I guess I'll tell him to get the 4690k. He lives about a half hour away from Microcenter too.

Thats good that he lives near Microcenter.  Tell him to wait until June 25th, at the earliest, and he can get the i5-4690k.  At Microcenter, if you purchase a compatible motherboard, you get an additional $40 off.  I am going to recommend that he not get the Asus Maximus Hero.  There is absolutely zero benefit to getting such a high end motherboard unless there is a specific feature that he needs, its basically paying more money for marketing branding.  Asus is a very good motherboard company, I own one myself.  I will recommend that he stick with the Asus brand, but go with a less expensive motherboard, unless he absolutely needs a specific feature that the Maximus Hero has.  The Z97-AR(~$160) is a very good choice of motherboard, it comes with all of the features he could possibly need, and is not overly expensive.  It also has a very unique and beautiful look to it if I may say so.  Other Asus motherboards he could check out at the Asus Z97-A(~$150) and the Asus Z97-K(~$130).  All Asus motherboards from low to high end use the same materials, its only the feature set that is different with each one.

Here is a video showing how

Hey, thanks for the recommendation. Sorry for the late response, I've been trying to help him balance his PC out so he doesn't get any bottlenecks. Anyway, I'm trying to get him to get the Z97-K, and he said it sounds pretty good supporting 8 GB of RAM for each slot. I actually never knew that high end motherboards didn't make a difference. Makes me feel like I blew 300 on a MSI X79A-GD65. I guess it isn't a big deal.

No worries, the Asus Z97-K is a good motherboard, can't go wrong with it, comes with all of the necessary features with no frivolous extras.

If he would like to step it up to the next level, the Asus Z97-AR or Asus Z97-A would be the options.  Both are $150, and come with a few extra features.  I really like the look of the Z97-AR, it was on sale for $135 just yesterday, you can see if the coupon code still works.

Well it depends what you want from your CPU, what would you like? To play games, browse the internet..?

The original haswell chips have better price/performance due to price reductions but I'd still say go for the haswell refresh as theirs a lot more to a product than price/performance.

It's not for me, my friend needs a new motherboard because his RAM and motherboard are outdated. He's mostly going to be gaming, so yeah.

If he plans to OC i5 4690k. If not, i5 4670 (non k) if theirs like a $30 price difference.

Yea he's not too big into overclocking, and I've gotten a lot of votes already for the i5 4670k, so that's what I'm going to tell him to get.
