for 120$ you get i3 4150, but you remember it is haswell refresh

4130 is similar price, but 100mhz lower

you get mobo for 50$ even less

6300 is really good performer, especially if you put cpu cooler on it and oc. you need 970 60$ - 80$ and a cpu cooler 30$

you dont want to go older i5 than ivy, unless you get like unlocked i5 or i7 with mobo for good deal USED

if you want i5, you easily get used one with mobo

i3 haswell strenght is single thread performance and hyperthreading, so in games, it really just trails slightly behind i5 even with high end graphic cards

Fx-6300>x4 760k>750k>(any)i3

sorry, but athlons are in sub 100$ and they perform like that also. 6300 should be standard for budget gaming non overclocked it destroys athlon and it is really up there with i3 and better if all threads are used properly. overclocked, it goes up in the i5 region as far as multithread performance.

which explains why the i3 stays up there in the gaming benchmarks, eh?

Get the i3. Its cheap and till you upgrade to 4 (or even 6) core chips, you'll do just fine.

My i3-4130 is a 1080p60fps BF4 performer, if you need more you can always upgrade down the line.

i3 4150 is a dual core with hyperthreading haswell refresh processor.

you cant overclock intel processors that havent got K on the end like 4670k

you must look after the motherboard that supports that processor, or update bios somehow ( in tech shop, or friend with haswell processor ) else you have to get 97 ( haswell refresh) motherboard

there is also i3 4130, and you can fit it with cheapest haswell mobo you get ( MSI ) and it will work. difference is 100mhz.

i3 trounces anything on FM2 right now (when using a dedicated GPU)

The i3 is comparable to the FX 6300.

Any i3 is like twice as fast in single-threaded applications as any FX processor, but much slower in multi-threading. So much that I wouldn't get an i3.

Think there's a special at NCIX right now where you can buy an FX-6350 for $119. Check pcpartpicker.com, might be at newegg or amazon instead. Probably would be the fastest processor you can get right now and can overclock well. Dunno why you'd limit yourself to FM2+/LGA processors.. You're just overspending and getting nothing out of your mobo for the sake of possibly upgrading.

i3 4150 + H97n-WiFi?

760K is kind of balls and the A10 is absolutely pointless in pretty much every regard right now...

The sale ended before I posted (sold out, or something), I just didn't check. So that recommendation is out anyway.

Was under the assumption you had planned a new build and form factor was limited to the mobo/what you wanted, not a pre-existing case if I'm understanding this correctly. In any case, FM2+ is a bad idea in my opinion. If you really want something to last, like I figure you are as stated before, lowest end i3 or upper-end Pentium G might be ok. Most recent cheap-ish i5's are the best, though they're out of price range.

G3450/whatever the newest one is (Haswell Refresh), i3-4150, 4460, i5-4590, used i5-3570/3570k if you want great performance for a decent price.

Do not go cheap and spend $10 less on an i3 by going with an older one. You want the most recent ~$120 price bracket i3 because they're more impacted by those ~5-10% gains than unlocked i5 processors. You can't make up for worse performance with Pentiums/I3's and you're not spending much more to get a better processor. They're still a massive waste of money seeing as i5's are less than double the price but more than double the performance outside of singlethreaded operations, and are binned so that the singlethreaded performance is still better on i5s.

The G3450 (or whatever the best Pentium Haswell Refresh is) is your best bet in my opinion because it will be on the same socket as i5s like an i3, but you're spending less than $30 for nearly equal performance overall to that $120 i3. If you take that into consideration at all and still want an i3 because they are indeed faster by at least a tiny bit, I hope it makes you realize how terrible i3's are. $70 Pentium is like 20-25% slower I think, but half the cost.. Save your money and buy an i5.
