DDR4 production is ramping down faster than demand for it is shifting to DDR5.

The 64GB ECC DDR4 LRDIMMs I bought for my home server are now listed for twice as much as I paid for them a couple months ago. 😕

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

DDR4 prices jumped when it was announced that they were dropping production and it has only increased since then.

DDR5 I've seen it said that it is due to demand for AI/data centres. E.g.

Nearly every analyst firm and memory maker is now warning of looming NAND and DRAM shortages that will send SSD and memory prices skyrocketing over the coming months and years, with some even predicting a shortage that will last a decade.

The shortages are becoming impossible to ignore, and warnings from the industry are growing dire, as the voracious appetite of AI data centers begins to consume the lion's share of the world's memory and flash production capacity.

For the better part of two years, storage upgrades have been a rare bright spot for PC builders. SSD prices cratered to all-time lows in 2023, with high-performance NVMe drives selling for little more than the cost of a modest mechanical hard disk. DRAM followed a similar trajectory, dropping to price points not seen in nearly a decade. In 2024, the pendulum swung firmly in the other direction, with prices for both NAND flash and DRAM starting to climb.

But, it is also very common that hardware prices start climbing prior to black friday and christmas.

Think I've read warnings about NAND shortage since 1 year, due to AI infrastructure demand mostly

Plus political situation and tariffs push prices up...

Demand from AI data centers… same as with GPUs. It's driving up prices for RAM as well as flash storage (SSD/NVMe)

Greed and AI is ruining things again. Prices go up when the rich people try to get more rich.

As to why look at the state of the world. Globalization which is part of the reason prices were cheap, at least in the US is breaking the fuck down. Not to mention as others have mentioned demand is up and supply just isn't there.

We have 4 proposed in Michigan. At least one community is fighting against it. Im sure more will follow. Many cite the fact they shouldn't have to pay higher electricity costs, which is what would happen. In my opinion these data centers should be required to build their own power plant to power their own shit.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

The amount of money dumped into this is utterly insane. You have all these construction projects that'll take years to complete, meanwhile many expect the bubble to burst any moment. Wonder how many companies will go down the drain and how many half finished projects will be left to rot once this all breaks down.

In the last two weeks I have been checking DDR5 availability and now most is out of stock. Prices have also increased over 50%. A DDR5 2x16GB 6000MT/s CL30 kit for example from the expensive price of $180 went to the insane price of $280.

yeah its crazy is it because of mining or AI maybe?

Seems the ddr5 (and ddr4) prices still increase on a weekly basis. I wonder when will they stop and stabilize before getting any cheaper.

64GB DDR5 that I bought 2 weeks ago have increased 33% in price, though there are some cheaper options the increase is still big.

Edit: just checked - the given RAM I bought at ~190€ is now 399€. So that's not a good example as the cheapest similar 6000MT/s DDR5 is at 233€.

Pax vobiscum

Every brand of the ram also increase ? Which brand is cheaper for DDR5 5600 ?

It has to due with the cost of the RAM chips. Most manufactures of RAM dont actually make the chips. Same with NAND flash memory for SSDS. There are a few companies that manufacture but many companies who sell SSD's and RAM. Because they have only so much manufacturing capacity there is a limit to supply. Are you going to sell a product for $100 to a gamer, or sell products for $10,000 + to a data center?

Does a data center need a non ECC ram ? Desktop ram are non ECC and most motherboard use at data center use ECC Ram.

Does server board support those Ram timing , DDR5 , None ECC Ram which is use for gamer ?

Which few company manufacturer ram ? Hynix , Micro , Samsung ?

It's the same chips, but ECC modules use more of them.

It's the same chips, but the enthusiast stuff is overclocked by the module makers. Standard chips in non-standard speeds and timings.
