Minecraft server on a machine with Xeon Phi

Whats the xeon phi gonna do?

 

I see a great strong but inneficient i7 there that will run the server great

 

How many people would even be on it?

 

As for the phi's they wont serve any purpose. They are truely terrible even if you could get a minecraft server to use them. Absymal single core performance meaning forever lag. These things are EXTREMELY hard to get to use as they arent seen as a normal cpu and also dont normally work on normal consumer hardware.

 

Each core would be comparable to some second gen atom junk if you somehow got it working through masssive qmounts of effort

Hi, I got a crazy idea last night. Will it be possible and, most importantly productive to run a Minecraft server/servers on a system with the following specs:

- Intel i7 10th gen

- 64/96GB DDR4

- 2x Xeon Phi 31S1P 

 

Just a wild idea I might put into a 1992 i386 retro case 🙂

Yes you can do it but the Xeon Phi 31S1P's won't be used and the Minecraft server(s) will just run on your i7. The Phi's are co-processors and require work to get any workload running from them. Regardless Minecraft servers generally only run on one core anyway so not a whole lot of point to try.

Getting the server to run across the two coprocessors is not what scares me, the question is: Will the computing power of the coprocessor be put to work

No the computing power of the coprocessors will not be put to work in this scenario, merely just very power hungry space heaters.

Unless your software is coded to use the co-processors, they do nothing but draw power.

you have two problems:

 

first problem: to use a coprocessor, the software needs to be specificly coded to talk to the coprocessor and assign workloads there.

 

second problem: minecraft servers already barely use more than a single thread, so even the majority of your CPU will be sitting idle.
