Non-reference card worth it with NZXT Kraken G10?

Go to solution Solved by coen113,

Hmm, by dropping down to a reference card I spend no extra by getting the Kraken G10. I think that's what I'll do, thanks for the input :)

dont get a 290 with a g10

the VRM's will overheat, and will still throttle your card, while the gpu itself will stay cold

If I'm going to just replace the cooler anyways, are non-reference cards worth it? Should I just go for the cheapest one? In case it's relevant, I'm getting an R9 290.

@gundershot

Go with the reference model if you are planning to use Kraken G10.

Non reference card are higher binned which means; they perform better, stay stable at higher clocks and run cooler.

If you have it in your budget, go for it. Hope it helps! :)

I did read a review when checking for my R9 card. The best option IS ref with Kraken. I just couldn't go for it. The VaporX is too damn sexy.

Could you put a better fan than the one that is included for better vrm cooling?

i believe the stock fan is not replaceable, but of course, ghetto mods exist

Thats interesting. I always thought that it had a standard 3-pin 92mm fan

Hmm, that is a big problem indeed. I guess I'll just stick to a good non-reference card

The reason the vrms get hot is they are passively cooled with no heatsinks. If you do decide to get it try and get some small heatsinks for them

Boom.  These VRM heatsinks, $20, should do the trick.  and there should be enough clearance between the PCB and the bracket for these puppies.  With a water cooled setup and these Heatsinks, overclocking will be a breeze.

Not entirely necessary, since the VRM is what gets hot, and not so much the VRAM, but if you wanted to, there are heatsinks for those as well, at $7.55.
