Alright, so it's that time of the year where my OS install on my Dell decided to go to crap. So, I went from using Xubuntu 12.04 LTS to Puppy Linux 5.7.1. The following 14 days with it are my experiences.

 

And thanks to @Damikiller37 for the little logo banner thingy.

 

Now, I will not be able to use it on the weekends, since I will not be at my dad's house (where my lowly Dell resides), so I will only be able to update this on the weekdays. I will continue to update this post with my experiences.

 

So today was basically a "make it look okay" day. And honestly, I forgot how terrible the fonts looked. More on that in a little while.

 

So, as you can see, this is my desktop. Took me about 10 minutes to remember how to change the background and all of the themes.

 

Now, on to that whole font deal... Puppy Linux is the first screenshot, and my netbook with Xubuntu 13.10 is the second one. I'm pretty sure we can all agree on the fact that the text in the second one is much nicer looking.

 

 

I also did some benchmarking. The specs of my Dell are in the first screenshot, and the ones of my netbook in the second one.

Nothing notable, other than I had to stop using it and go back to using my netbook because the fonts were legitimately giving me a headache.

Nothing new.

I found out that you can install some of the .deb stuff that you normally could on Ubuntu.

Changed my wallpaper, if that is important.

Changed up some of my theme elements, if you care.

I'm now officially more than halfway through this, and I can say that I'm happy about it. The fonts are driving me nuts, and I can't seem to find a fix to make them better.

Installed Google Chrome and it works reasonably well. Glitches out a lot, and locked up the operating system once or twice.

Nothing really notable, I was busy most of the day.

Well, I was able to crash it again with Chrome...

Puppy is okay, but it's just not as nice and sleek as what I am used to.

I used eOS as my daily driver for a long time. And this poor thing wouldn't even bother trying to run it in the first place. And besides, @Damikiller37 did one anyway.

it's linux, you just have to try and see how it works out on your particular hardware

ubuntu feels damn slow on my high end system, while mint+KDE (which is supposed to be heavier) runs fine

i know people running ubuntu on outdated hardware with no problem

 

it's just an OS after all, it shouldn't generate overhead, if it does then it means that there is a compatibility issue somewhere in the system

That netbook is his primary system. We should all donate one dollar to him so he can build his dream rig.

Meh. I might just throw Windows XP on it next and just roll with it.

Depends on how good your pc is, if it can take ubuntu there's no reason not to use it (aside from personal preference). And it's not that heavy, it runs ok on my pentium 4 3.2ghz (although I am considering xubuntu anyway because it stutters when opening dash).

I have windows and I am thinking of turning this pc into a linux rig but windows has better compatability with games as of date so should I. or would it make more sence to to put linux on my other pc?

I would keep Windows on the one that you use the most, and Linux on the one that is used less and you don't really game on or anything like that.
