It looks like Microsoft is going to make a option to buy devices at a slight reduced price with simply keeping bing your default search engine.

There is tons of good things to come from this:

#1 cheaper devices, with just a slight "hassle" (I personally find bing to be better than google for about 90% of my searches)

#2 a improved Bing, the more users a search engine has the better its results can be.  Bing offers tons of great things like facebook integration and such.

Will people like this if devices are cheaper?

Will bing flourish because of this?

Quote from NotebookCheck:

"The OS will be sold directly to manufacturers and the only stipulation is that Bing cannot be changed prior to selling the device, though users are free to do whatever they like afterwards. In addition, Winsupersite is reporting that only devices retailing for less than $250 will be eligible, and this could very well be the same discount we reported on way back in February."

What can you get with $250 that can run full windows?

I would rather pay £50 more to not have Bing.

I hate bing, but you have to admit.  This might be a chance to improve Bing for the better, Forcing Bing upon users is like forcing Windows Fanboys to use a Mac, it causes anger, sadness and total chaos.  So I'm against them forcing people to use Bing but on the positive side people might actually start using Bing.  And I think people who are, well.  Not super wealthy buying a $200 device will probably be super happy to get a better device stuck with bing than a worse one, also with bing.

Because probably in the next version of Windows, they aren't going to "force" bing upon us but will make it so it will be absolute hell to switch.

The Dell Venue is one that comes to mind.  The February discounts were for devices that are under 10".  This (to my understanding) is Microsoft OFFERING the OEM (estimated) $25-$50 to use this version.

On another note, I think that the option wont be able to be changed.  Look at Amazon's Fire tablet.  You can get it for $25 cheaper IF you opt to watch a ad every now and then. (I don't have one so I don't know how it works, I just remember it happening).  Someone that wants something on the cheap, this is a awesome deal.

It's like everyone's forgetting how we burgeoned from the earlier technological times. Open architecture and freedom. I understand why but it still disappoints me. By having big default I hope it means it will be set default and not be permanent.

You gotta do you girl. I always say you gotta do you. And if he's doing him, then who's doing you? Because right now, it seems like no one's doing you.

Even though I don't even operate with any open products (that I can think of) I totally agree.  what happened to sensible prices with a "hey do what you want, but its not our fault or problem if you break something" attitude?

+1 here

I agree with that but I was thinking even deeper. One of the reasons why we grew so quickly is because an open architecture allows us to modify it as much as possible its like Linux. Sure you can still develop stuff for closed system as far as Apple's but its similar to telling a master architect to build a mansion with just marble and a hammer. I suppose it lessens competition, but they do still own the rights to the software, plus that openness and wider availability of the software will allow it attract more people. If they continuously become more recluse with their software the only innovation that will take place is within the corporations; where the drive to create a glorious OS is much less of a priority.

On a side note I wish there was an angry Hitler video on this.

You gotta do you girl. I always say you gotta do you. And if he's doing him, then who's doing you? Because right now, it seems like no one's doing you.

Yes. It has been mentioned at Microsoft BUILD event, back in August. It is for 9inch and smaller devices. It is free.

The only thing it does is set IE default search engine to Bing, and OEMs agrees to not change it, nor include another web browser, which in any case, they never normally do.

The user can change the default search engine in IE.

This was covered here.

Thats becuase it throws stupid things like pictures results in the search. Search anything real, not stuff like "taco", and most instantly hate bing. I find I have to go 3 or 4 pages in to find the right results from bing often even for simple things like official websites. I searched "NVIDIA Drivers"  on bing a month ago and the first result was a fake nvidia website, the next  6 or so results were driver programs, and the last of those was the actual nvidia website. The home page. Compared to google it's the top result.

I still use bing quite often, as I fresh install a lot of computers, and the default is bing.

You'll also find bing is more shopping and traveling oriented. When I search something google gives wiki articles and stuff I need and bing gives me....fast food?

I'm not opposed to using bing, it just needs serious improvements in its results instead of more shiny interactive maps and stuff. I tired bing for a few weeks and I couldn't switch to it. It was terrible even though I really wanted to like it.

Just my 0.02$

Umm yeah MS, no offense or anything (Bing is offensive enough if you actually try to use it ba dum dum tsss!) but didn't you basically lost a huge case because of shit like this?

I'm surprised the European Comission hasn't brought up similar cases against Google as well:

How can it be any slower?  Its nothing but text.  If you notice a difference in internet speeds then something is wrong with your ISP, and if your computer cant handle the extra picture or two bing displays, then your not on this forum to begin with.

bing won 1 search for this forum oddly enough, google won the next three and then the final test they looked the same.

Which Microsoft shouldn't have got in trouble for.  its their own OS, of which the user has no rights to.  If Microsoft wanted to just not include a browser at all (that's what I would have done just to be a penis) they can do that too.  The sad part is most people don't use chrome or firefox by choice, the common folk usually download Adobe's Flash player or some stupid Flash game and it has the little "Install Chrome and make default browser" check box that they don't read.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!
