What speeds should you see locally to a NAS?

So using a old Optiplex as a NAS 

 

SSD for OS and 4TB WD Green NAS Drive

 

plugs into a gig switch with a gig connection

wondering what speeds I should expect to see as was hoping fo ra  bit more TBH getting about 10-15mbs when writing to it does that seem correct?

SMB (Windows file sharing) over Gigabit Ethernet should get you about 100 MB/sec.

 

You should be seeing higher speeds either way, but try creating a share on the SSD to rule the spinning drive out as a factor.

Depends on the slowest component. Gigabit can do up to 125 MB/s. The disk you could to measure with e.g. CrystalDiskMark (not sure which model you have exactly, so can't exactly look it up)

 

You also need to keep in mind that copying a file has some overhead. Because of that copying many small files is going to be slower than copying one large file.

I shared both drives and when get same result when on about both 

 

Also mistyped I get about 10/15 MB/s not mbps

10mbps is only 1.25MB/s !

In comparison, I can transfer sequential data to my NAS at up to 100MB/s.

I mistyped I get about 10/15 MB/s not mbps

Specs of the optiplex?

 

Share a folder on another pc and copy a big file like a moving from the optiplex to that system to check if speeds are capped at that both ways

Most likely the connection between the NAS and switch is running at 100Mbps, check cable/settings.

But if that was the case shouldn't my speeds outside be naff?

Bugger guy at work may have narrowed it down

Yeah, none of that looks all that promising. Can you run a local disk benchmark such as CrystalDiskMark?

The qvo is such a shitty ssd its usually as slow as a hdd when writing

Besides Ethernet connections, it may be due to this Seagate hard drive being too slow for writes of specific content, as that model is based on SMR recording, which has proven poor performance when transferring small files. I have an SMR-recorded WD30EZAZ drive as cold storage, which struggled to store tens of thousands of photos at the same time.🫠

Iperf3 can, though, help you figure out how fast the data can be transferred between NAS & PC, with drive speeds completely ruled out.

If you're copying the file over SMB there is a lot of overhead.
Try copying the file via SFTP or FTP from the NAS directly to your C: (as your D: HDD seems to be a little slow)

I think LTT used Xcopy or something to test out the 10Gbe link to their NAS to avoid the limitations of SMB.

How is the ssd connected? If it is a sata drive that sounds about right. 

What happens if you copy a file to that drive over the network instead of d?

That green drive I think is your problem.

When going from my Gaming (Main PC) desktop SSD to the SSD drive in the NAS its about 100mb/s

 

Now WTF

Same file going to the HDD is now getting same speeds ... wtf

 

so appears this PC to NAS is getting the full speeds so must be issue with the other PC specifically tyvm for narrowing this down and help guys
