What to do with a Server in a normal home?

Go to solution Solved by Levent,

Install proxmox and experiment like everyone else does.

Hi, im currently trying to get into servers. I have alot of parts (mainly networking) and server hardware, but no idea what to do with them, maybe a file host to get files from my main pc to my secondary's?

Debian based hypervisor that uses QEMU and its own webgui. Its insanely useful, I migrated to it from ESXI at work and I use it at home.

Soo, whats a Hypervisor and QEMU/ESXI?

But from what i've seen it's a virtualization software?

Edit: i think i remember it, imma give it a shot...

Aha! First task for you then. Find proxmox

A free debian based virtualization/container software, is that  right?

Please don't talk to me in server language i have zero knowledge and that sounds like chinese to me :d

Debian = one of the oldest and most forked distributions out there.

QEMU = Virtualization software for GNU.

ESXI = Vmware's hypervisor, not free.

WebGUI = web graphical user interface.

Honestly, these are less than 5 second google searches to find and read more about. If you dont like searching for things yourself, you might as well list your hardware to ebay already. You wont get far without your own research in this field.

Hypervisors are just programs (or oses or parts of oses think of unraid, proxmox, windows server hyper-v,...)

Basically the manager overseeing it's employees (the vms) act within specified limits and are easily manageable by the manager.

Esxi is just vmware's take on this.

Qemu is a hardware emulator allowing you to do wacky things likr have a "native" arm vm with android but its actually not arm just x86 emulating 😛

Honestly just fuck around and find out really.

Just know that your early knowledge is gonna be incomplete and you wont know that you are doing something wrong till shit gloriously explodes in your face later down the line 😛

Then start over.

Either way once you have a nice working setup

Start over. Trust me version 4.0 is gonna be THE SHIT

If you have a bunch of DVDs get a Plex server.

If you want to host a website look into apache

if you want to block adds get an add blocker.

There are lots of uses for a home server, my personal one I just have plex running in truenas and some vms to mess around with. The sky is really the limit if you want to do a specific thing google it and there is probably a way to do it.

My Main rig: i7-4790, Asus z97c, Radeon HD 7850 (2gig), Fractal Design Focus G.

My Laptops: Dell xps 12 flip screen, Dell Latitude e5410, MacBook 2009, and a Hp 2000

I'm probably gonna do that and back up all my DVD's.

Fitting since i'm looking into getting myself an home cinema system, thanks for giving me all the ideas, i'm certainly gonna look into getting at least 2 servers (1 for plex and one for game servers,  file back ups and/or messing arround) ^^

If you use proxmox you could run it all on one.
