Does smoking cannabis around your pc damage it

Black Gragon
Go to solution Solved by SykesGabri,

Yes, it's just as bad as smoking tobacco in the same room as your PC. Honestly I wouldn't recommend you smoke any combustible materials indoors at all, as the buildup of gunk that happens on everything the smoke clings to can make it harder to sell stuff later on (there's a reason "smoke free home" is commonly mentioned in second hand listings), and can decrease the value of your home if you decide to move out. If smoking outside is an option for you, outside is the only place you should smoke. If it isn't an option, get a THC vape instead and avoid exhaling near your PC's intake fans, the negative effects of vaping indoors are far less of an issue to deal with.

So I live in a state where cannabis is legal and I’m about to buy my first pc and would just like to know if smoking cannabis around your pc will collect gunk in it just like if your were to smoke cigarettes in the same room

Yes. Any type of smoke has the potential to be hazardous around the PC.

Don't smoke anything near the computer. Don't even vape near them.

Cannabis is equally as bad as cigars when it comes to "burning materials sticking to plastic and metal"

Cigarette/Cigar smoke contains chemicals that stick to plastic and metal. Even in homes where people don't smoke, when a forest fire 300 miles away can be smelled, that tends to result in residue from that fire ending up on everything plastic and metal. Vapes are going  to be "less bad" but only by virtue of it being water vapor. Water is still bad for computers, it's just not going to be as sticky, and as long as all the fans are operating, it shouldn't condense on anything. Just don't vape while the computer is cold/off.

The TL;DNR short answer is that you probably don't want to smoke near the computer if you want it to last more than 3 years. Computers are sensitive to smoke, but they only die because you turn them off and it has a chance to seize the moving parts from the sticky residues.

My housemate's room has a noticeable film on nearly everything from him smoking (and vaping) cannabis products over many months. Dust sticks to it.

My buddy was a pot smoker (and cigs too) around the rig I built for him. I went to visit him a couple of years later and he said the computer was shutting down when he would play Starcraft 2. I took a look inside and found this sticky mess of cat fur, dust and smoke resin. It took two bottles of isopropal alcohol to clean it properly.

Smoke less, as it's painfully obvious answer.

Pot smoke and cig smoke... Duh.

You do realize that same stuff will be on your lungs? And you are worried about your hardware being affected?

A smoker survives at least 10 years of smoking. So the PC that isn't made of sensitive tissue should make it at least as long.

Once saw the exhibition "Body Worlds". Most of the exhibits were smokers. It didn't need to be declared, since it was obvious from the lungs.

If you worry about smoking impacting hardware, you have all your priorities wrong.

For the love of God what a bunch of Karens...

My computer is literally going to shut down and die in 3 years if i smoke around it?

I work around computers that are and have been exposed to heavily chlorinated air on a 24 hour a day basis for nearly 20 years.

Yeah, the motherboards and other components look like hell from corrosion, dust, insects and such... but they continue to function with out a glitch.

Smoke around a computer and it will literally shut down and die in 3 years....

What a bunch of horseshit.

Most people who smoke are well aware.  That's completely irrelevant to the question. Also, as a smoker, Trust me bro - we know. Mostly because someone always feels the need to state the obvious any opportunity and it's also has warnings on most products.

Yes, but sometimes it takes more than one strike to set the nail.

OP seems to think (or at least wondered) the most danger of smoking is to the hardware.

There also is the (wrong) thinking that vaping or THC are harmless unlike regular smoking. If everyone was aware, this wouldn't be a topic ...

Most smokers have some mental way to block reality. They talk about that one guy  that lived to the age of 80 despite drinking and smoking (while ignoring the hundred that died prematurely). Or they list all the other life hazards outside of smoking to make smoking sound less serious. It is an art in knowing, but denying reality.

You do you. OP can draw their own conclusions from everyone's comments here or elsewhere.

Cannabis smoke/vapour is often sticky and dust and dirt will adhere to surfaces covered in it slightly more, but is unlikely to really damage or destroy your computer, especially if you do basic regular maintenance to keep it clean.

I say this as someone that vapes next to their PCs and have smoked pounds of the sticky stuff in rooms filled with consoles and computers for over a decade as a medical patient.

Particularly sticky and gross bits can be cleaned with Isopropyl alcohol.
