Intel HD 630 -> BenQ GW2780 = no sound?

Unsolved mystery.

Huh.  Weird one.  I can't figure it out.

Asrock H270m Pro4 board, i5-7400 (HD 630), no discrete graphics.  BenQ GW2780 monitor with built-in speakers connected via HDMI, in OSD the volume is turned all the way up.  In BIOS (latest, 2.50) on the board HDMI sound is on.  Installed latest Intel graphics drivers from intel.com, followed by a reboot.  In Windows 10, in the Sound Control Panel GW2780 is selected as the default output device.  In Windows the volume is turned all the way up.  On the Speaker Setup screen I do not hear the test chimes, but see activity on the volume meter in Windows.  On the Properties screen under the Advanced tab if I choose a format (such as 16bit, 44100Hz) the test chime does not sound.

How do I fix this?
