2Gb or 4Gb for 1440p?

mapexlegend

Hi, would buying a 4gb GTX 670 be a better choice for 1440p or a 2gb GTX 680?

Yes it would, 2gb is really not enough at those resolutions with all the particles and shaders nowadays

4GB for sure, I play at 1920x1200 on a 2gb card and my vram gets about a hair's breadth from maxed on this gen of games.

4GB or more for anything above 1920x1080

2GB for 1920x1080 or below.

Throw as much V-RAM at your rig as possible, resolutions are about to take the world by storm

LOL not good enoigh but nice try. I am calling BS on you unless you cite valid links to back up your claims. Here are some to back up my claim that you are dead wrong... http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-690-benchmark,3193.html

In the links priviously denoted you will notice that the GTX 690 is handling HD+ resolution and even triple monitors like a champ.

Err, dude, in case you haven't noticed yet, for most of the benchmarks at 5760x1080 they had to turn down the quality/turn off aliasing. We're talking about max setting performances on this forum for the most part unless otherwise stated.

2gb might be enough for the games today but specially since next gen consoles are coming out with more ram, games will use more ram/higher textures so just get the 4gb and be happy!

Hey there. You are looking mighty fine today, have my virtual cookie!

If you're turning up the anti aliasing maxing out all the settings, you'll definitely benefit from a 4GB VRAM. You'll struggle to run your games with all those settings turned to the max with just a 2GB VRAM :)

Yeah. He's been acting like that every where on the forums lately.

Anyways, 3GB and higher is becoming the new standard. Modern 1080p games are starting to eat up more than 2GB of VRAM. I modded the heck out of my Skyrims textures and MSI Afterburner is saying I'm eating like 3GB of VRAM on my 690 which has only 2GB.

I can confirm this, I can't run 8X MSAA in crysis 3 and far cry 3 at 1440p due to 2gig VRAM on my 670 SLI setup... Well I'm pretty certain it's VRAM holding me back.

I think it would have to be 4K on a 24" screen that would take to make AA unnecessary.

The same settings were used across the board for all GPUs tested so ... Nice trolling

2gb is fine. Vram is a marketing ploy to get people to buy more GPUs.

Ive seen some other posts from you where you said the same thing, is everything that you dont know about a marketing ploy? Good luck to you if you have a 2gb card trying to play games which will come out, in 1440p

At 1440p/1600p, the 690 still performs better than the Titan in most games but once you get to more modern games, the 2GB VRAM starts to falter.

http://us.hardware.info/reviews/4030/19/nvidia-geforce-gtx-titan-review-incl-5760x1080-and-frametimes-crysis-3---5760x1080-+-frametimes

http://www.techoftomorrow.com/2013/pc/nvidia-gtx-titan-vs-gtx-690-performance-gaming-benchmarks/

You also have to take into consideration if a game has good multigpu scaling which might impact the 690's performance or games like Metro 2033 that just hate NVIDIA cards for some reason.

Lastly, if you are insane like me and mod the heck out of your Skyrim, replacing the textures with 4K res ones, 2GB will not be enough.

BF3 1440p With 4xAA according to MSI is over 2Gb of Vram used, at the end of the match I noticed it, not at the start.

Other games I have now like Hawken isnt nearly that high but closer to just over 1.2GB Vram, but I think I Remember Hitman (the new one) using 1.6-2.3GB Vram when I had it installed.

To say its pointless now is stupid, considering 1080p is standard for the consumer level buying his monitor from a store these days.

I cant wait for the 1440p to be the common standard, by then....the graphics cards power should be quite impressive on paper.

I'm using 2560x1440p from my normal 1080p since recently thanks to tabuburn :) but I'm glad I have a 3GB model of card than the 2GB.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz
