Teach us how to do a LTT style upgrade for boomers.  Our parents and grandparents need help (they still watch cable TV after all).

Here is mine. designed and built it by myself. Yes, it's steel and it weighs 80 kg. I put it on wheels to move it around when I use the projector. Don't have any game on it... Instead, it pumps out a lot of CGI. Cheers!

Welp, here goes everything... 2001 setup (just started my consulting business) :

setup_with_names.jpg.5ded996ea86066a31644e724571899c0.jpg

and finally... 2023 setup (just started my early retirement) :

IMG_0046.thumb.JPG.a67d6d9ad89854c41a7319752162cb8b.JPG

There's a 'desktop PC' under the desk but the laptop's running both external monitors... the PC is basically just a server now. You don't want to see the cable clusterf00k that is under there. It'll give you PTSD.

I have some before and after too 😄

My older daughters trying Rocked League and the youngest one leaving fingerprints on the case window

before.jpg

The after was actually after having the room finished. It's a bit more organized tech-wise, but cluttered due to not putting papers and stuff back where they belong.

And below is the "today" situation

you don't have a PC. you have a processing engine. That is an absolute unit.

I felt very humbled and grateful that I kept pictures of my setup of from High School to now when I'm near 30.

This is going from 2014 - 2016 - 2023

Long-time viewer, first-time poster here, but I wanted to share my own glow-up over the years:

2016-ish: The only things in this photo that weren't scrounged from scrap, bought used, or traded for labor are the phone charger, desk pad, and mouse. The desk was literally found on the side of the road. I ended up having to upgrade because the old AMD Phenom 965 Black Edition, 12GB of mismatched RAM, and Radeon HD 7970 could not play the Destiny 2 demo without crashing.

image.thumb.jpeg.b9a7d659b61c206e1dd1a60391a6abc2.jpeg

Late 2017: A combination of Black Friday and Holiday deals, and some wheeling and dealing on the used market, saw me upgraded to a Ryzen 5 1600, RX 580, 16GB of RAM, ye olde Meshify C, and some new peripherals and accessories: image.thumb.jpeg.6b2a1d33a554663bd91735bb64107b81.jpeg

2020: The pandemic saw the next big leap, what with all the time off work while furloughed, government stimulus checks, and an "inexplicable" increase in custom PC clients wanting $1,200 builds. I stretched every dollar, too- getting a new desk, shelves, peripherals, case, cooling, storage, motherboard, an upgrade to a 3700x, and an Asus GTX 1080 Turbo that I got in exchange for a Saturday spent tuning up a friend's truck (this model of 1080 was so loud and hot I ended up installing an ID-Cooling AIO kit onto it. Best $70 ever spent.) The setup on the right was my workstation for repairing and building client systems as a side hustle.

2021: Some major life events, including the passing of my father and my landlord putting the home I was renting on the market, saw me moving into a new place and adjusting my setup accordingly. This setup was not long-lived, as this landlord pulled the same stunt as the last one and they put this house on the market at the end of my lease term.

2022: This was a big year for me. I got a great job working from home, my son was born, and we moved, yet again, into a bigger place. Suddenly I had a 'home office' and needed to make some more changes to the setup. I downsized the overall size of my desk, but the additional depth was worth it to me.

2023: Over the past year and a half, I've experimented with different monitor layouts...

image.thumb.jpeg.b409c92b2b814ef28e26ace1d59e9bc9.jpeg

2023 Continued: Along with decorating my workspace with mementos of my son Nikolai, my automotive hobby, and my other nerdy passions (why yes, that picture of Professor Farnsworth is signed by the legendary Billy West, thank you for noticing) I've upgraded my hardware to an RTX 3080 12GB, a Ryzen 5900x, 32GB of RAM, an additional 2TB of NVME storage, and an ultrawide monitor that Plouffe would be proud of: the AW3423DWF. I also traded in my GoXLR Mini for a StreamDesk+ and invested in a customized 98% keyboard (Akko 3098B with Gazzoo Boba U4 V2 switches and a custom-colored set of shine-through keycaps).

image.thumb.jpeg.2134dc745200887c1f67ea8492f95ccd.jpeg

Today: I soon discovered that this monitor layout was not ergonomically sustainable for my day job, so in order to save my neck and shoulders, I ended up where I am today: the ever-popular TIE Fighter monitor setup and with my PC under the desk on a raised roller caddy to keep it off the carpet. I don't regret this at all, as it makes it way easier to access the system for cleaning and maintenance, and the current monitor configuration is so much more productive while also being easier on my neck and shoulders. And for those wondering, the RGB smart lights are still installed, but I just haven't bothered getting another picture with them set to "Man Cave" mode, lol.

this is my mildly infuriating setup (it gets worse the more you look at it )the laptop is what i used to use and the pc is what i use currently.

However both these systems exist side by side (old laptops are cool)

Go ahead roast me
