Why is it so hard to find anyone to talk about hd/dvd?

Hello,

I'm trying to get software to play my hd/dvd movies.  I know that blu-ray won the war but that doesn't mean people didn't buy hd/dvd's.  I have a good size collection, and when my hd/dvd add on for the 360 went out 2 months ago I bought a LG/GGG H20L  which is a hd/dvd/ blu-ray rom for my home media center, it came with cyberlinks PowerDVD 9 and it worked great. but yesterday morning when I tried to play a movie for Sunday brunch with the family, it said I had to update. So I did and then it told me to update again which I did and it gave me PowerDVD 10 which will play my blu-rays but not my hd/dvd's now. I have uninstalled all the programs and cleared my registry and used the disc that came with my lg rom drive to put PowerDVD 9 back on my computer but now it still said I have to update my software.

Is there anyone out there that knows of this and maybe can help me? people are telling me to use vlc player which I do for everything else, I have downloaded the files to play blu-rays but it doesn't let me play hd/dvd's.

Thank you for any help.

You'll probably have to obtain old software.

I know Arcsoft TotalMedia Theatre used to work with HD-DVD. But I think pretty much all new 'DVD' style software makers have dropped support for HD-DVD because obviously it's a dead format.

Given that you probably can't buy any of the old software, you might have to be resourceful in how you obtain it.

I personally use Arcsoft's "TotalMedia Theatre" software (I forget which exact version) and it will playback my HD-DVD's no problem. I use an XBox 360 HD-DVD drive on the HTPC over USB. Occasionally it won't play a really old or scratched HD-DVD, but 99% of them are fine.

I've ripped all my HD-DVD's onto the computer using MakeMKV anyway, that way I don't have any playback issues come at me out of nowhere.

You may be right about the new versions of TotalMedia Theatre not supporting HD-DVD. Some people on other forums are saying it still supports but is unadvertised. For @ScionRay I would suggest downloading the trial version and testing it out.

Worst case scenario, you could purchase the current version and then "find" the old version. I think given the circumstances that there would be no moral objection to that.

I have/had some HD-DVD's. And  I had the LG HD DVD/Blu Ray combo drive and used to watch movies on my computer. What I would look into is PowerDVD 7 Ultra it has the ability to playback hd dvd and versions after lost the ability to do so. or maybe possibly there is a setting somewhere to turn off updates.

Thanks for all the advise.  My powerdvd 9 used to play everything till it started asking for updates, There was a way to turn off or add the update without it changing into powerdvd 10 which it is doing now?  I forgot where I say or found the thread that had all that information still been looking for it.  I hope I find it.  I don't know anyone that could help me with older software. I know there are other means to find what I'm looking for just don't trust it much trying to see if it works on my computer?

Again thanks for all the help.

I also used my HD/dvd 360 add on piece to watch my hd/dvd's have the Matrix Trilogy and other great movies. but I was having problems with my hd/dvd 360 player on my computer so I plugged it back into my xbox 360 and it worked fine.  I was using PowerDvd 9 software which came with my LG /GGG H20L combo drive and until 2 days ago was working great till it wanted updates? so now I hope there is a way to work around the update to get the software working again? Thanks for the advise
