Wich GPU to upgrade from a 1060 ?

Bobigno

Hi everyone, I got myself a AM4 x570 aorus mobo with a ryzen 5 3600, 32g of ram and a gtx 1060 6G supercharged from EVGA. I have no clue due to the gigantic choice of GPU wich one would fit my needs. What my needs are you may ask ? Being capable of streaming 3A games like God of war or Hogwarts Legacy at 60 fps on decent quality settings at 1440p so i can stream something that doesnt resemble a muddy pixel goulash. As for my budget, anything from 200 to 500 Euros max will do ( I do not care about rtx, dlss, frame gen or any trickery ) I also sometiemes render videos so anything helping to cut some time is welcome even if not mendatory. I also hope not double the power consumption of my card since I only have a relieble 550 watt Power Supply and hope not having to change it during the process or take it into account on the imposed budget. Thanx anyone that give any good advice on what i should get ! (Im from france so US prices are irrelevent to me)

Bless you all

With that budget it is 7800 XT or 4070 at the upper-end, but the 4070 is easier to handle power-wise. I hope it is a decent PSU that can cope with modern cards though, because ideally I wouldn't run either card on it.

A more modest option might be the RX 7600 (or 6700 XT, but it doesn't have AV1 encode and I'm not sure if there are other differences in RDNA 2&3's streaming capabilities), or Arc 770.

A 4060 would use significantly lower power than the 7800 XT or 4070, so is a better bet for your PSU, but depending on prices where you are, they're not usually great value and not ideal for 1440p in AAA games.

You won't be able to stream them at 1440p with that CPU. That's just not happening, nor would you be likely to have the bitrate for 1440p streaming anyways.

Get a 7800xt and a new PSU that can handle that, make sure you DDU the drivers, and you will be happy with your performance, I assure you.

Thx for reminding me the PSU is a  Corsair TX550 M 80+ Gold.

I think I need to get some clarification on how i want to stream stuff. I  dont want to stream on 1440p resolution. I just want to use my 1440p monitor to play and stream without being on 1080p low and dropping frames when i do stream. My OBS settings are set to 1080p anyway. Thx all for your recommendations I just want the GPU that makes the most sense with the best value.

Well, I think you can certainly play in 1440p for many games on your PC with a 7800xt. But streaming and playing at the same time is a heavy task, I wouldn't go in expecting you to be able to do both.

You definitely won't play anything on 1080p low, regardless if you are streaming/playing at the same time or not

not with NVENC, and idk if AMD has similar feature

TXm is an A tier PSU, so it should theoretically be one of the higher quality ones

I would expect that setup to be fine on a TX550w Gold with a 4070 but the 7800XT would be pushing it slightly.

I hear the 7800XT is a great undervolter with a -15% power limit though and that wouldn't worry me as much.

CPU : Ryzen 7 7800X3D @ -18mv all core except -13mv on Core 5 because its a pig.

Ram : 32GB (2X16GB) Corsair Vengeance DDR5 6000MHZ CL34

GPU : Reference Design RX7900XT sold by Saphire running at 1050MV undervolt and +15% PL (355w)

PSU : Corsair HX750w Platinum

4060 and 4060TI show 550W on the system requirements.  Usually, those are very conservative.

They have to be really , If someone is running a 13900k with either of those cards then 550w might be barely enough.

It's an unlikely scenario but not impossible , Same with the 650w and a 4070.

Now a 3600 is a 65w cpu leaving 485w for everything else , 200w GPU and ample amount for everything else including the small transient loads that might be encountered.

I would say the OP is good with a 4070 and he will even be fine with a 7800XT if he's willing to drop the power limit a little.

I'm getting on just fine with 200w more power use whilst having much higher transients so why wouldn't he.

2 things: 1. nvidia is better at streaming. 2. you will have huge issues streaming some of these games, not to mention just run, at 1440p with that cpu.

ok, in that case, 1. still applies,  afaik nvidia is far better at handling streams, video encoding,  etc.

don't get me wrong 3600 is a good cpu, but with some modern "AAA" ie barely optimized games it might struggle.

Thank you all for responding to that thread.

Another thing I'll add is I have no intention whatsoever in overclocking any part of my system. As for 1440p gaming, I already played Gears 5 (although its an older game) on my 21/9 ultrawide 1440p monitor And was quit happy with the results. It is a 60hz monitor but the visuals where plenty enough for me. I also rarely play newer titles since I mainly play indie games or dolphin stuff on my computer. Also my TV wich is hooked up to my PC now is a 1080p TV so I'm mostly enjoying single player experiences on that display. As my Ultrawide recently died i dont think itll be a problem to run smoothly on my 120hz 27 inch 1440p monitor. I also plan on getting a PS5 and a 4k tv down the line so my needs for recent 3A gaming at 1440p are not that high right now. I will eventually upgrade the power supply further down the road. My goal here is to get a gpu that can handle the handfull of times i need to game on 1440p 30 fps. The streaming will be at 1080 60fps and in the long run I wish to be able to drive my 4K TV my High refresh rate 27 inch and a 21/9 1440p monitors without putting the gpu on its knees. Furthermore, I may putt the 1060 and the PSU into my old OEM PC to make a dual pc setup or just have a mediacenter PC i dont know for sure rn

So I guess the 7700XT 7800XT or the 4060 4070 are the best options. Also isnt there an advantage for team red since I am alreardy on a AM4 platteform (I intend to max out the CPU as well in the long term)

Avoid that 4060 , it's not good enough past 1080p.
