You ok with YouTube Adblock?

I always thought the general option was pro Ad Block, but know that YouTube is cracking down on Ad Block Users I see a lot of people coming down on the Ad Blockers saying they should either watch the ads or pay for YouTube premium.

what are you’re thoughts?

Entirely a personal choice. I don't care if people use an adblocker or not.

i turned off adblock because youtube was gonna stop playing videos if i didnt...

i lasted about an hour. the amount of 'hard cut in the middle of a word unskippable double ads with crying babies selling me something i have no use for' i've had in that hour beats anything i've ever seen in commercial television.

i'm at the point where if youtube cuts off adblockers all together, i may actually stop watching youtube because i just actually cannot deal with the ads. i dont inherently mind ads, i just cannot cope with the disgraceful way they are inserted, and the fact i keep getting tampon ads DESPITE youtube having all the data to determine that i dont need tampons.

I've had premium for years anyways for Youtube Music, so I don't really care but I think people should just continue to do what they were going to do anyways

a "soft" solution that i used to use before just going full adblock was extensions that auto-mute and auto-skip ads. you still get the mid rolls, but you don't get the absolutely jarring volume blast and sometimes the auto-skip works on the first frame of the ad.

firefox currently has an extention that replaces the adblock popup with a youtube embed player (which i don't think they are allowed to play ads on since embeds are usually from other websites). it's a bit jank and the videos don't go into your history, but it otherwise "works"

what are you’re thoughts?

While I hate ads, if the product / service is as good as it can be then its a simple choice between pay and don't see ads or don't pay and see ads.

Unfortunately for Google and maybe more so for Spotify, they not only serve ads to free users but make their product inferior to a paid subscription. For Google / Youtube its not being able to run the mobile app in the background and for Spotify its the 5 skip limit.

I pay for Spotify Premium and am seriously considering the same with Youtube but the list of monthly subscriptions is getting out of control.

Ads are here to stay and its only going to get worse for the ad-blockers. Has anyone compared the effectiveness of Pi-hole recently. In the space of only 12 months, its gone from being fantastic to almost useless.

I pay for YT Premium because I use YT Music as its almost the same price as Spotify so it's no-brainer.

But AdBlock is absolutely necessary to browse Internet at least somewhat safely.

Edit:

Also, why should I care about using or not using AdBlock if they gather my data regardless if I pay or not?

Also, I don't feel bad for big tech companies since they use TaxBlock.

They will get better at tracking and blocking it, this is the first offensive in a war IMO and I don't see Alphabet/Google/YouTube backing down. We are in an economic downturn, and every single private company will be cutting fat and expecting profits from as many of their businesses as possible. I think I saw somewhere that 43% of people who use YouTube adblock. I think it's fair to say if you adblock you are probably more active online across a number of platforms including YouTube.

If one has the chance to deprive rich corpo fucks of their ill-gotten gains, it is not only your right but your duty to do so. As far as I'm concerned, I already paid Google with my data, that's what access to YouTube is worth to me. Their problem how they pay for their services with that. They can either live with the fact that I block ads, or they'll have to put up a paywall, like streaming services. But I'm not gonna subject myself and my time to watching ads.

No and yes. Adblocking literally is piracy, but everyone thinks of it differently because it doesn't feel like stealing and it's so normalized and ads are so hated. This whole mess shows how bad of a business model the Youtube concept is, and internet advertising in general too. I feel like the age of free access is coming to an end, like how the boomers enjoyed a capitalist paradise before everything went to shit, but it's 90s/2000s kids and the internet.

  • 1 month later...

The ads that get blocked are not useful, they waste our time.

This is a demerit to society: wasting time with often harmful messages.

As such, I view it as a moral imperative to block these ads.

In fact, showing these kinds of ads that harm society should be illegal.

EDIT: Here's an elaboration on just how harmful ads are.

Quote

Advertising is destructive, ubiquitous, and an unquestionable detriment to civilization in its entirety. I worked in advertising, got a degree in advertising, studied concept and archetype design, worked in market research and on the creative side. This is what I have come to understand.
