Interesting to see macOS outpace iOS here. Generally, iOS is way more widely used than macOS.

Linux amazing
but not for gamers
someone will say you can use Wine
yeah Tried but not smooth like Windows
to be honest almost i'm not gamer anymore but I not want move to Linux
have a lot Winrar files that linux not support have to convert ,
but now . will use 2 OS SSD sata for Linux but which Distro
I remember
I asked about mint they warning me to not talk about in Discord server
I become very doubt about mint
Mint bad ? spy ?
because old posts someone said Ubuntu spying rumor ?

I do not know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone

At work, I use Windows. It's what pays my bills. Other than that, I have settled on macOS/iOS (desktop, mobile) and OpenBSD/OmniOS (servers).

Wine is usually best for basic windows applications, proton is usually optimised more for games. And for the .rar files you can open with 7zip which you can install on linux

I use linux mint myself and find it is the most user friendly for beginners, and good idea to try duoboot while you're still learning

Main system (used for gaming): Garuda Linux dual booted with Windows 11.

Basic laptop: MX Linux

Living room PC: Windows 11

Second gaming PC: Fedora.

For my main system I pretty much cycle between Windows 11, Fedora/Nobara, and Garuda Linux. Currently using W11. My plan is to switch back to using Linux as the main OS once Plasma 6 is released next year. As far as which distro I'd like to try out then, I might go with something Arch based like Garuda or EndeavourOS, but I do want to give OpenSuse a shot.

Most of my other systems run Windows 10.

It's a free country and all (depending on which country you live) but why run Windows 7 in the year 2023?

I am happy you asked. I run Windows 7 because of it's support for older programs. Although these programs  "technically" work on 10 or 11 they often break. Also Windows 7 typically "just works" (unlike my laptop) and with having minimal time on my hands, that is great.

Since I am concerned about security, I have 0patch and Microsoft security essentials installed.

Also, did you know that Microsoft security essentials still receives updates even though it is discontinued?

big oof.

It's possible that there might be workarounds, like perhaps (credible and legitimate) third party companies that can continue support, that can be potentially sketchy and risky. I don't think it's the same thing, but I do use Kaspersky security on my Windows installs, with it surpassing Windows Defender in my experience, as well as in videos I've seen on it. That said I don't think that would bridge the no system security updates thing.

Depending on what kind of software you're using, realistically Linux could be a good alternative, especially if you're talking about a pretty damn old machine. My recommendation would be something rock solid and stable, such as MX Linux or Mint Debian edition. Both are based on the latest Debian release, and are much more stable than Ubuntu based distributions. After the initial installs which are very straight forward, using the systems would be as straight forward as either updating the system via graphical interfaces, or even the terminal if you wish (these distros using the apt package manager, so to update your system you'd use the commands "sudo apt update" followed by "sudo apt upgrade" to proceed with installing updates. Can combine them together with "sudo apt update -y && sudo apt upgrade -y" to save some time.

As far as software goes, the only things essential to install post installation (preferably with the terminal) is both wine and winetricks, which can be done with "sudo apt install ____" filling the blank in with their names. Between the official repositories; as well as appimages (which basically function as self-contained software similar to executables on Windows), flatpaks, and snaps for better universal software support, you shouldn't have any problems with software support, with wine being able to fill in the gaps, depending on your use case. There are some decent alternatives to certain apps, like Krita as a photo editor, and Kdenlive as a good video editor.

I agree that the security is weaker (even on a separate network with a strict blacklist), but for my case, its worth the trade off. Linux will not suit my needs, although I respect it's utility, (used Red Hat and others quite a bit). I am thinking about running Mint on some other machines.
