How much should I spend on RGB and aesthetics?

I plan to build a PC with a $1700 budget and love RGB lighting. However, I want to balance aesthetics with cost-effectiveness.

What's a reasonable amount to spend for RGB?

This is somewhat hard to breakdown like this. You don't generally breakout just RGB as a portion of the budget, as the RGB is generally a factor of the parts you put in the build, such as the memory, fans and GPU. 

 

I'd suggest selecting the parts first and if versions of those parts include RGB and fit in your overall budget, there you go.

I have just gone through the same dilemma.

 

Tread carefully with RGB because the costs can get ugly.

 

I decided to upgrade a load of basic (but perfectly good Antec P12s) that cost about a fiver each to a full suite of Lian-Li Uni SL120s. 25 bloody quid each! And then you have pumps, blocks and reservoirs if your into water cooling.

Completely subjective.

 

Some people would say "$0, if it doesn't make the PC perform better than it's a waste of money."

 

It's your PC though and you have to look at it every day, so you shouldn't feel guilty about spending a bit to make something that looks nice to you and reflects your personality.

 

Certainly with a $1700 budget you should be able to make something which you find aesthetically pleasing and meets all of your functional needs. Just don't get suckered into buying parts that use RGB bling to camouflage poor functional quality (there are a lot of lower-cost cases like this, for example).

i got like $5k in my system... of just rgb...

 

if i had to go it agane i would not go rgb...

I used to mock RGB.. until I bought ram with it, and a mobo with it, later a GPU with it, then a case with it, then some cheap fans with it..

 

When I want real performance I will swap them out to high performance models, but the one thing I like about RGB is that it is better than looking at just mobo lights
