Youtube 1080p for Premium members only

Youtube is updated with the access to 1080p resolution with high bitrate only for premium members when using the web version of youtube

I think Linus and Luke talked about analytics before and it showed that most people don't change their default resolution and just watch YouTube in whatever.

Most people don't give a damn about 1080p YouTube - it's just the vocal minority as always.

 

What are you going to do if the essential informational video you look up is in 480p?

Many people watch on mobile, where bitrate and resolution isn't as important. But on desktop it is.

This is 360p. Fine text is still readable.

People will be a-okay with 720p. If the audience can't see what's happening, it's because the uploader did a crap job either capturing their footage or encoding. It's not great, but it's far above "is so low you actually don't see anything"

Perhaps, but Linus also mentioned that Premium subscribers give a lot to the content creators for their views. So for me the monthly subscription fee is both for convenience features and also to be able to support the channels that I watch daily without being forced to watch ads all the time. It's not that much money anyway so I personally don't mind.

YouTube Premium views are worth significantly more than Free users. Like 40x-60x more (if I remember correctly). The calculation is a large range because it's an entirely different pool of money compared to Free views.

 

He's never mentioned any kind of revenue split from Memberships.

I only started watching the toob a few years ago. Making content was supposed to be a hobby, for fun right?

 

I could just as easily stop watching the toob. I wouldn't pay for it.

 

They should pay me for all of the commercial that I have to endure.

that's interesting, I wonder though how is it worth more if the premiums don't have to watch ads, is the revenue from the premium that significant?
