DP Review saved from the axe and under new ownership.

Distinctly Average

Summary

After the news that Amazon were closing DP Review a couple of months back and most of the staff left it appears someone didn’t want to let the site die. Today it was announced that Gear Patrol have acquired DP Review and its future looks less bleak

We’ve heard from many of you over the past several weeks, and we realize there are many questions about what comes next for DPReview. We’re thrilled to share the news that Gear Patrol has acquired DPReview. Gear Patrol is a natural home for the next phase of DPReview’s journey, and I’m excited to see what we can accomplish together.

I want to reassure you that we remain firmly committed to what makes DPReview great: the best camera reviews in the business, industry-leading photography news and features, and one of the most active photography communities anywhere on the internet.

This is just the beginning of a new chapter for DPReview and we don’t have all the answers yet, but I’m sharing what we know below and will continue to share information about this change as we get more acquainted with our partners at Gear Patrol.

Thank you for your continued support of our team and legacy. We appreciate it and can't thank you all enough.

My thoughts

I’ve never heard of Gear Patrol before. Their site doesn’t really make it obvious exactly what they do but DP Review seems a good fit for them. Whether they can make a profit where Amazon failed has yet to be seen. But often a smaller company will dedicate more resources to making a project like this a success where Amazon probably saw it as a spec in their massive ocean and therefore too much effort for the return. Hopefully the site will live on as it has been a great resource for photographers for a very long time.

Gear Patrol isn't exactly a source of quality journalism, it's hip marketing.  Will be interesting to see how this goes.

source: look at stuff I can't afford on Gear Patrol and Uncrate frequently and have for years.
