m.2 ssd for GA-Z97X Gaming 3

Hello everyone,

I've got an old GA-Z97X Gaming 3, I can't seem to figure out what speeds it supports on its m.2 slot. Anyone has an idea? I want to get the Samsung 980 PRO 1TB M.2, but I think it will not support its full capability.

Cheers!

Gigabyte didn't print it, but based on what I could deduce, M.2 does not exist below PCIE 3.0, and your slot is M-key, meaning x4.

But...  From what I read, Z97 typically has 16 PCIE 3.0 lanes and 8 PCIE 2.0 lanes.  So all of the 3.0 lanes are routed to the x16 and x8 slot, leaving 2.0 lanes for the rest...  So it seems your M.2 slot probably got 2.0 lanes, but I don't think there are NVMes below 3.0, so that's what you'd be buying anyway...

But look here:

https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z97 Extreme9/

Quote

M.2 PCI Express module up to Gen2 x2 (10 Gb/s)

And your slot is labeled 10Gb/s, meaning that's just 2 lanes of PCIE 2.0...  And that explains the loss of two SATA ports when you use it, it's the same lanes of the chipset, just different protocol.

The pro would be wasted regardless.

The slot supports sata guaranteed, so any SATA m.2 will work great.

As stated above, it's probably a nice 3500mb/s slot, so anytng above that will be limited.

But it's an older system so ANY ssd will be more than adequate.

No particular reason for choosing a Pro drive. My goal is to get as good a drive as it gets for this slot, probably I'll go for something like Samsung 970 Evo Plus that states 3500 read 3300 write, anything better would be a waste like you said. Another point I'll also save few bucks.

...you could also get a PCIE M.2 adapter either for the 2.0 x4 slot or steal 3.0 lanes from graphics, assuming you've got discrete graphics.  If you use iGPU then use the 3.0 lanes in the x16 or the x8 slot.
