Tested 1 IPS and 1 VA Display; both are worse than >10 year old display. What should I get?

Hey y'all,

I am currently looking for a decent gaming monitor, however, the ones I have tested so far are just not what I want.

The first contender was the ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ, which was basically perfect... except for the extreme IPS glow.

I RMA'd it, but the second one suffered from the exact same issue, darker images have had noticeable yellow patches on them.

Another person took a look at it and also found it quite bad.

As far as I know, this mostly is an issue of more recent high Hz monitors, right? Older IPS displays at least do not seem to suffer from IPS glow that is yellow-ish, but only white, which would be ok.

So I figured why not try out a VA Panel, since they cannot have IPS glow and have a much higher contrast ratio.

The AOC Agon AG275QXN looked decent at first, but especially in faster games the slow response times are too irritating.

Additionally, images with complete black in them also look different depending on when I take a look, it kind of changes over time.

Of course, my over 10 year old TN display only has 60 Hz and 1080p and the colors do not look as great, but at least it does not have any of the mentioned issues and fast response times.

Does anyone have some ideas about what monitor I should get?

Preferably it should be >= 120 Hz, 1440p, <= 27" and under 500€.

Personally, I’ve Hebert used them, but LG Ultra Gear monitors seem like a good option. Plus, you know that they are mostly reliable, not only because of all the good home appliances and tvs that they make, but they make a bunch of monitor and gaming monitor displays that a variety of companies use, and they have created some of the most revolutionary panels out there, like the one that can bend on the Corsair Xeneon Flex.

Most VA-s have some caveat also. Are you sure you want VA?

In any case, I'd trust Rtings if you really want VA:

Thanks for the resource, I just picked a VA display since they cannot technically have the annoying yellow IPS glow. If it weren't for this issue, IPS would be fine for me as well.

Yeah, agree - costs quite a lot more, but has so much less downsides.

I'd personally go for - https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/lg/27gr95qe-b

That's the standard 1440p display.

OLED does seem like a good option, however with starting prices at around 900€ those are kind of out of my budget.

Are there at least no issues with burn-in nowadays?

I guess the lack of burn-in are to be expected in a 1-3 generations.

But if using a dark theme in OS, perhaps the burn-in is not too prevalent these days. No 100% proof though.

take a look at the gp27q or the m27t20, they are mini-led so the glow isnt nearly as bad, the color gamut is wider than oled too.

Just give you all a bit more info what the problems with the displays I tested were:

The first ASUS display has noticable IPS Glow

image.thumb.jpeg.d4c0ea6fca35b16cd12e23fcb2d134fb.jpeg

just like the replacement unit I got:

image.thumb.jpeg.37170808fc6154a73ecbf348d62a4b6c.jpeg

However, on the AOC display with the VA panel the uniformity of the black was also not what I think it should be at some times:

image.thumb.jpeg.15ca5e27a40cc3119358e1d5adeac672.jpeg

Of course, it all looks a bit different in real life, but the camera images got the gist of it I think.

Could this also be a different issue, or are displays with Mini-LED backlight or OLED panels definitely better at this aspect and worth the money?

OLED doesn't have a backlight so won't have those issues.

In my experience, my own monitor that is not a gaming monitor but more like a colour accurate monitor, from LG, does not have much of that kind of things at all. So not all IPS monitors is that at all.

Tho I can not point towards some that I know won't have it.

Mini LED only nice when gaming and watching movie, during productivity you should turn off the local dimming as it will have halo effect which is quiet annoying and irritating to eye, once you turn off the local dimming, it is same as normal VA or IPS monitor depends on the mini LED you buy is VA or IPS.

If you are very particular on uniformity, save some money and buy OLED instead. But do remember OLED had slightly less sharpen than LCD in text due to no standard RGB pixel alignment in all gaming series OLED now.

In short they is no perfect monitor and you need to tolerance in between on it.
