I know nothing about computer speakers/studio monitors

fisherrr

Is there a definite recommendation for a budget pair of speakers. Just something that can run from my computer without an amplifier with good sound.

I always just used logitech speakers when I was poor, they have built in amplifiers. They had fairly good sound.

i have a pair of logitech Z120's for my bedside media pc, they're "defenately acceptable" at low to medium volumes. if you're looking for nothing more than a plug&play solution that's affordable but "good enough", that's probably the direction to go.

in the space of audio, there's as many different opinions as there are solutions.. i'm half expecting for someone to call me <insert tech slur here> for even talking about the logitech Z120 because blabla this $200 audio solution and a DAC brabble brabble... it just comes down to how you define "good".

Z120 is about equal to most things that produce music (your TV's builtin speakers, car stereo on your average car, etc.)

you can also go for more pricy stuff, for example some $150 thing from bose, it'll be better, but it wont be 7x better.

What you want is powered speakers, so speakers that need a wall outlet. Those can be driven by pretty much any device with a 3.5mm outlet. As for which one, that depends heavily on your budget and your intended use case. Studio speakers tend or should produce a mostly linear output which to most people may sound boring. However they offer more range and adjustability to certain styles but you may want to add a sub as well at some point. Hifi speakers on the other hand are the preferred option for 99% of people (this includes general PC-Speakers). Please tell us your budget first and what you want those speakers for. More expensive speakers may not make sense if your room is not big enough so keep that in mind as well.

What I consider budget is very different from what you may consider budget so what price range are you willing to spend?

Here... they are on sale for $100 USD in the US right now... not sure how much longer they will be at this price. I'm not sure these are the "best," but if you don't know any better, then these are going to be amazing. Especially compared to a Logitech type product.
