Why Did Linus Discontinue "Intel Extreme Upgrade"?

Hannah Smith
Go to solution Solved by dizmo,

Haha, no. Nothing is questionable here. The marketing budget simply dried up for that campaign, they asked AMD if they wanted a go (or AMD contacted them), and thus, they're doing AMD builds now.

Not too long ago, Linus consistently did Intel Extreme Upgrades courtesy of Intel's CPUs.

Not only has Intel Extreme Upgrade stopped but it's been replaced by AMD.

I'm curious was it due to the end of a contract or a disagreement?

I'm not sure if Linus has publicly spoken about it, but it's definitely questionable how AMD took over after Intel left, especially since Ryzen is a valid competitor to Intel.

He did, at length, on the WAN show.

Not everything is some big controversy. Contracts end and sponsors don't have to renew. It happens. You can put down the pitchfork.

So there's no more Intel Extreme?

The contract was not renewed, they now have a contract with AMD. Idk how much more clarification is needed, it is over. I mean never say never since they could very well get a deal going again in the future. but for now, it's AMD instead of Intel. still the same type of video though so nothing really changed honestly

Thats bit open-ended questions. Extreme or Intel Extreme is Intel's trademark. Having AMD Extreme would go against that trademark since they are on same field. Intel does have other Extreme-themed sponsorships. Most notable being Intel Extreme Masters eSports event series. I'm pretty sure they have scrapped Extreme-naming from their Core i9 series CPUs while back.

As for the video series, I haven't had time to watch the AMD editions yet. But I would assume the concept remains same, just naming scheme has changed. And since its about sponsors (just like ROG Rig Reboot or LG Ultrawide Festival), we can't know how long it will be going or whether Intel decides to claim back their spot or not.

And while we are on the topic, i'm still burning up, waiting for the next AMD Ultimate Teach Upgrade video. Especially after such an epic pilot episode with Adam. It's almost like the pause between Infinity War and Endgame, the only difference these are supposed to be the beginning of a new saga.

From what I understood, the contract did run out, they asked both Intel and AMD if they wanted a new similar contract, and AMD was willing to pay more.

It's not really anything questionable about it.

It matters that you don't just give up.”
