What cpu should I upgrade to?

hey guys! Just curious on what I should do. My current system is a r5 3600 and rtx 3060, i been thinking in upgrading my cpu to a better one right now, with future goals to have an rtx 4070 later this year. But idk what to upgrade to that won’t cause any bottleneck issues or anything related to that. My knowledge on hardware is a little out of date, idk what’s good to pair the 3060 with that will also be good with the 4070 in the future.

Nothing. Once you get the 4070, if the CPU holds you back, then evaluate an upgrade. If you're set on something new right now, and are fine with a more stopgap solution, the easy answer is to just update BIOS and slap in a 5800X3D.

Right now nothing.

In the future see if your cpu is actually holding you back or if it's enough.

Keep in mind a 3600 is STILL a GOOD gaming cpu.

Also small advice skip the 4070 its just bad value when the 6950xt exists that is better for less.

The only answer is the 7800x3d…

I’m more of an intel fan, they just have less issues and seem to be more stable, so I’d get a 13600k or 13700k but the 7800x3d is the current gaming king.

Best performance does not always equal best overall, or best in a given circumstance.

The total platform cost of the 7800X3D is about $800. But a 5800X3D can be put into the OP's AM4 board for just $330. That's less than half the price, but the performance loss is only about 20-25% when paired with a 4090 at 1080p. With a 4070, this difference would be reduced even more.

So I would argue that, paired with a 4070, given already owning an AM4 motherboard, the 5800X3D is the only choice.

All that said, the OP should wait until the GPU upgrade happens to decide. At 1440p, a 3600 doesn't hold back a 4070 as much as you might think - depending on the games, target framerate, and settings.
