Can I use toothpaste as thermal paste?

Go to solution Solved by CowsGoRoar,

LOL  :D

Hey guys, I have a 8 year old HP desktop. I pulled out the Celeron in it, and I have a spare Pentium 4. Just for the LOL's, I wanna see if there's any performance difference.

I don't wanna spend a single nickel on it (pennies aren't used anymore in Canada  ^_^), so can I use toothpaste? Mint keeps things cool, so I wanna try it. Anyone think it works?

Or at least encourage me to do it. I don't mind if I explode it.

I think I read a topic here about somebody doing it, and it sort of worked...Obviously, it's not recommended.

Mint keeps things cool, so I wanna try it.

Of course! And don't forget to use a fan with a blue LED instead of a red one, so that it helps cool it even more! ;)

no... toothpaste has different thermal properties and its not a good conductor.

even though thermalpaste have almost the same sophistical properties they are very different.

you are better off spending $5 on thermal paste(which you can use later as well) than having to pay for a new CPU and or MOBO if you burn yours.

A german hardware website once did a test with things like toothpaste and ketchup vs. normal TIM. They performed quite similar, but will dry up, gunk up, start smelling and stop working after a very short time.

I've done it before... My Mobo lasted another 2 years before capacitors gave.  It is a toothpaste vaseline mix.  ALthough thermal paste is so cheap I would just use thermal paste.  The only reason I used the mix before is I did not have a car to go get some and I lived in the middle of nowhere.

HELL NO.

I did this to my 2.0GHz Celeron and it overheated and puked. Smelled nice though.
