500 watt PSU enough for R9 280x

The build will have an i5 (non overclocked) no LED's or anything. Simple build. I will OC the video card though. Newegg recommends a 600 watt for the card.

I should be studying.

Depends on the PSU's effiency and the amount of headroom you want.

 

All stock it will run yes but without any overclocking headroom or extra watts for bling in the rig.

well steamboxes have a 4770k with a titan  all using a 450 watt psu

technically , it can run on a 450 watt supply (unpopular opinion) , but dont expect to perfom to its max capacity tho. you'll need a 600 watt supply to be on a "safe" work enviornment.
