Is a 4070ti really that bad, given the alternatives at similar prices?

davidrf

I read and watched many negative reviews about the 4070ti, that is undeniably an overpriced card. Still, at least on the market of my country, I can't find much appealing alternatives at that price.

- A brand new 4070ti is found at 870€ (MSI) or 850€ (Manli). I saw a bunch of used 4070ti selling for 700€ with almost 2 years of residual warranty left.

- A 3080 costs 800+€ new and about 600/650€ used with some warranty left

- A 3090 costs about 800€ used

- I don't even consider AMD stuff.

Given this scenario, I really don't think 4070ti is so bad, given the alternatives. Am I wrong? Or it's just stupid to buy a 4070ti now because in a couple of months it will cost 200€ less? Any input is much appreciated.

Don't go for the used 4070 tis just yet cuz they aren't a good price but check out some new rx 7900xts becuase it is better overall at a slightly better price depending on your country but if your doing heavy 4k work or gaming then the used 3090 would be better with its 24gb of vram (dont go for the 3080 at all)

I think most people making a lot of noise were not seriously going to get it anyway. We all wish pricing was lower, but it is a take it or leave it. It is what it is.

I just looked locally (UK) and a new 3080 10GB is cheaper than the 4070 Ti. At two major suppliers 3080 12GB isn't available any more. In that context, 4070 Ti is still a solid upper mainstream GPU option. You get more performance than similar priced previous gen. I'll give a nod to some people's concerns about the 12GB VRAM. It is kinda entry level if we're looking at high settings going forwards. Still, if you are the sort of person who wants max everything you probably want a more powerful GPU anyway.

Used is always going to be increased risk, especially post-mining. This is one area where if I were to take this route, I'd look for a big name store selling used with some warranty, but of course their pricing wont be as low compared to private sales, so you're still paying for it in a sense.

7900XT is nearest team red competitor, which offers slightly more raster performance for a similar price. IMO that doesn't make up for lower RT performance and lack of nvidia features.

4070 TI makes sense when you compare the price to last gens new prices right now (not the MSRP price tho).

The problem lies in the in the masive price increases Nvidia has pushed through to the years.

If you really want to buy new, and don't want a AMD GPU for whatever reason I do agree that the 4070ti makes the most sense, the only thing that bums me about this card that it only has 12gb of vram whilst being on par with a 3090 which has 24gb.

If you have a very old card or none at all then it makes sense to get the RTX 4070ti but from a value standpoint it makes no sense to get it now if you've got a good enough card like RX 6650XT or RTX 3060 and better as these cards can handle pretty much anything at 1080p/1440p anyways.

Seems like the issue is... With what's out, the 4070Ti is the "best" option for price to performance. The problem is, everything that's out is WORSE than shite and should be hundreds cheaper, and so it's sort of the shiniest of the turds. On the other hand, price to performance has never really scaled totally linearly in the product lineup, where you might get like... I dunno, 60-80% more performance from a 1080 vs a 1060 6GB, but you'd pay more than double.

Here, the 4070Ti is priced above where it should be in the lineup no matter what, whereas we already kinda' knew there was going to be a big premium on the "Titan" type 4090 or something like that. But correct me if I'm wrong, folks.

I've been out of the loop for a while, but it looks like they're going to pass of a bottom-tier card for a 4060/Ti and not even get any performance increases lmao, or they'll be so small as to be an insult for a ridiculous price tag. It's bonkers. In fact, the 4070Ti is PROBABLY really a 4060/Ti that they moved up the stack because of big gains.

4070Ti had sh#t reviews because it just don't offer much perf/price than previous gen, and that at a very high absolute price

But it's still better than previous gen at a given price, but not by much (maybe 15% max), where reviewers were expecting +30% perf/price gains as was usual 2 gens ago

Am I wrong?

Not really, its just that in its current price its a wedge card between the 900$ 7900XT that would trounce on the parade of 4070Ti on any scenario that involves raw raster, and it cant really beat price to performance to last gen nosediving price as @PDifolco points out. When you already own a last gen GPU, 4070Ti as your entry doesnt make sense at its price point.

The main issue I have with the 4070ti apart from the obvious being way overpriced for a 70's series card is the lack of vram.

We are easily maxing 8gb of vram already and I give it a couple years till 12 is there.

Mainly because we havent seen the next gen consoles alone yet. The ps4 and xbox one are sticking around far longer than normal and hence keeping specs down

12GB will not be good enough in the long run and Nvidia knows this. But they know people will buy Nvidia, they have 80+% market share after all. So they can just offer less hardware now so you will be more likely to upgrade in the next 1-2 years. 7900XT is going down on prices, costing nearly as much as a 4070Ti... but has 20GB. Even if AMD drivers are a bit bad right now (AMD has proven to fix issues in the past), it is still going to be much better for the next 3-5 years. You never know if you have the luxury to upgrade often in the future.
