Trying to format used SSD

NinYoda

I recevied an old laptop form my work a Panasonic CF-54 wich was broken. I would like to repurpose the SSD inide a Samsung MZ- 7LE1T00 1TB for my gaming pc but according to windows the drive is empty and has no partitions wich i know is not true there should be some windows partitions on there.

I have tried the following steps:

  • changed sata kabels
  • changed sata port
  • used windows disk management to try to format the drive
  • used diskpart to try to format the drive
    • I got a I/O device error when i want to create a new partition

something tells me the drive is encrypted or protecded in some other way but i dont know how to check that.

any advice is much appreciated.

In diskpart if you type "list partition" you will see what is currently on the drive.  Is anythign there? you will need to delete it first..  I believe there is a "clean" or "clear" diskpart command as well, but be very careful with it. make sure you are on the correct drive.

if you're not fussed about losing the data on the hard drive, run Clean All in DiskPart on the Correct Drive you don't want to run that on a drive that you need, it won't give you a "Are you Sure?" window it will completely format the drive.

clean the disk using DLDIAG (link here: Western Digital DLG Diagnostics 1.37 Download | TechSpot)

then when the WRITE ZEROS is done, go ito disk manager and format the drive to NTFS, should be all good after that

Dont forget to mark as solution if your question is answered

Type "clean" after select disk 7, then try to create the volume.

If that doesn't work, maybe install Samsung magician to see if it finds a problem with the SSD?  It may have failed..

For such stuff I use Parted Magic and I always recommend doing a Secure Erase.

Could be that the drive itself is damaged, how was the laptop broken? If it was dropped there is a high chance that the drive is dead

How was it broken? Sorry for the 20 questions, it'd be important to know though if it's been dropped or if the screen had been broken by someone leaving a pen on the keyboard and closing the lip for example.

ahh ok, the last thing i'd try is within diskpart, select the relevant disk and run Clean All, and then try to create your partition, also try creating it without specifying a size e.g. Create Part Pri

If after this it still doesn't work I'd say the drive is damaged and probably unusable 😞
