NES Video Teeth/Stairs Problem

tridy

Hi.

I need some help with the video on NES.

When I run games on my European NES I constantly get the teeth/stairs effect where lines are shifted to the right one after another and then after several shifts get back to the original position.
I connect it through NES-RGB and OSSC. I tried to connect another NES through OSSC and it worked OK there, so the issue is not with OSSC but with NES. Any idea what the problem could be? I tried several cartridges and get the same result.

I am attaching a screenshot that I took with the phone.

In addition to that, when I was trying to run Blaster Master cartridge, I got flashing background in the game. I am not sure if this is related or not.

Where do I start with troubleshooting the problem?

Thanks!

I will try that later today. I guess I will have to disable NES RGB for that with "Start+Select+Left (hold for 2 seconds) - Disable/enable NESRGB board".

I will get back as soon as I have tested that.

you'd also want to plug it in with composite

I would guess a NTSC/PAL issue, or were both the NES's you tried European?

Here I am comparing Composite to RGB by taking photos with my phone. Sorry, I have the capture card ordered but it has not arrived.

This is a European Console and European cartridge:

Here is the comparison:

The composite does look smoother but more blurry at the same time.

RGB looks sharper but edgier, and has yellow shadow/edges:

Another try with Blaster Master

when I use RGB, I get the flashing background, but Composite does not have this problem:

I have another NES USA region-free modded console and it plays Blaster Master just fine through Composite; well as expected, a bit faster but no graphics glitches.

I also have Everdrive, so I tested Duck Tales from it as well to tried to eliminate the possibility of a cartridge problem, and had the same result.

Blaster Master from original cartridge and from Evedrive gives flashing background (via RGB).

So, as the next step, what could be the reason for the flashing background?

I think you might be right in this case.

I found PAL profiles for OSSC and it removed the teeth/stairs problem.

However the flashing background on Blaster Master and yellow shadow issues are still present. I am trying to see if anything can be done about it.

It might be dirty contacts. I'd open the console and give them a good clean.

While it's open, I'd also check for bulging or leaking caps.

As previously said, dirty contact(s). More specifically I would guess the H/V Sync pin or pins.

The reason why this is probably not the contact, is that:

1. When I use NESRGB, the background flashes

2. When I use Composite, the background DOES NOT flash

so how can this be the issue of the contacts?
