780 or 770?

Go to solution Solved by i_build_nanosuits,

The GTX 780 is a much cooler card than the r9 290 and consume quite a bit less power too...making it a quieter card, it's a much better choice.

Also the GTX 780's have a lot of headroom for overclocking where the r9 290 come's in already overclocked by AMD...the GK110 is a better GPU

and a little more capable than the hawaii board, these are all facts.

The thing AMD as going for it is the price, in some countries ATM the r9 290 is very agressively priced making it a better choice when price if factored

in...but that's not the case in canada and USA.

780 by a landslide

gk104 vs gk110...check benchmark and reviews, the 780 is a much stronger card, here linus review of the 770 will convince you to invest in a 780:

Not really fond of AMD atm, the heat output and power draw is enough to draw me away.

You know the 780s aren't exactly cool right?  Pretty much exact power consumption/heat output as the 290s.

Ok, I see the reason for going for the 780.

Can you link me a link that confirms your statement?

Was basing it more off of owning both, but....

dude i doubt he will buy a stock r9 290 so your argument is useless .r9 290 uses 20W more lol. its like saying don`t buy a gtx 780 Ti couse it runs warmer and uses more power( the 780 Ti does use 25W more than r9 290)

---

i really recommend aftermarket 290 for the Vram for you triple monitor setup

DUDE, i don't know where you get your 20w more from?

on idle alone it's 25w more (30% more) here this trusted site (http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R9-290-vs-GeForce-GTX-780) is saying under load 250w vs 381w...

wich is more like 131w more for the 290 under load...it's quite a lot, in fact it's 35% more power draw, wich equal 35% more heat produced...

You may have a better third party cooler on that card you have but it produce the same exact amount of heat as the reference design card, it's just more efficient at dumping

the heat into your gaming case and taking it away from the GPU, but it heat's up your room just as well..and cost you the same in electicity as the reference design card,

perhaps even a bit more for having 2 or 3 fans...

gpuboss trusted site ? are you kidding or what ? that site just compares specs on paper. lol never use that site again thats a friendly advice

the 20W comes from here. not even with furmark which is tottaly unrealistic doesn`t go over 300W . the avg power usage is 214W.it peaks at 245W.

this IS a trusted site.that actually makes tests not copy-paste specs on paper lol

if the future don`t make recommendation based on cpuboss and gpuboss pls

Don't you find interesting that EVERY other website BUT the one you linked have different figures in terms of power consumption for these cards ? here, they tested A LOT of them you can

check the methodology in the beginning of the arcticle if you don't trust them, all the cards peaked at over 360w under load...

every other website including the one you linked are saying the same thing. read the avg power consumption lol not 1sec 300w peak. the avg power consumptin is well below 250w

59503.png

total system power consumption is around 360w not a card alone.and thats with an i7 six core @ 4.2 oc

I just looked at the entire review from the link you provided only to realise that you highlighted only the ''good'' part of the review, the numbers that you liked to show...

reading through all the graphs clearly shows that the 290 consumes significantly more power and generate quite a bit more heat and noise...isn't it?

Here's the part of the review that i would like to highlight:

This also means that the 290 isn’t competitive with the GTX 780 on the matter of power consumption and power efficiency in general.

A 54W difference at the wall for identical performance in Crysis 3 – or extrapolated over our complete benchmark suite a performance

advantage of 6% – is very difficult to swallow. As with everything else to come for power, temp, and noise, the GTX 780 has a very real

advantage here.
