Nvidia 3090 and 550w psu

xDoron22

Just a quick question..

I'm building a desktop PC for a friend and there is a delay in the GPU shipment (6650XT).

I have 3090 founders edition on my PC.

Can I use 550W PSU just to get a display out to install windows?

Do I risk my 3090?

Thanks

Depends on what PSU you have. You could install windows from your computer to that drive or use the psu in your system

As long as the PSU isn't complete garbage there should be no risk in doing that, assuming it has the proper amount of PCIe power connectors to get the card to turn on. Just don't put the system under a full 3D load that would get it to draw 400W+ and you won't have any issue, and even if you did the PSU should just shut down before anything will do damage to it (again assuming that it's a unit worth using).

That said, you might as well just wait for the 6650 XT and install Windows instead, that way you don't have to worry about DDU-ing the Nvidia driver and all that.

IIRC @Moonzywas running 3090 with a similar wattage PSU but I am not sure what PSU they used or what they were doing with it. Quality and what you plan on doing matters.

Which psu is it? If its a low teir psu then you may damage something if you accidentally put it under heavy load.

If its a good unit it will work fine at idle or low load.

I will use it just to install windows, office and windows updates.

Just to make the computer fully ready to be used when his GPU gets here.

The PSU is ROG Srix 550W 80+ Gold

That unit is pretty good, it won't kill anything if you did this, just don't expect to game on it without random shut downs (these aren't dangerous, they are designed to protect your hardware, but at the same time you don't want to be hitting them all the time).

Still would recommend you just wait it out and do everything with the 6650 XT instead so you don't have to worry about driver conflicts and all that, it's just giving yourself more work to do for no reason other than being impatient.

CX550M, with a undervolted 3900x+3080ti system (full tilt around 470W from the wall), running full tilt for at least half a year before I changed the PSU to hx1000

That said, I don't recommend people doing it. But if op just wants to install windows, it should be fine, the load isn't that heavy

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

As long as its not an amd cpu of an intel F cpu just use the dedicated igpu

If his cpu doesn't have an igpu you can use your 3090

You will be risking it if its a cheap Chinese piece of crap

If its a good quality one you should be fine

If the 3090 does peak (which is unlikely since you're only intalling the OS) the pc will just shut itself down

EDIT:

Saw that its a 550W Thor psu

Yeah its fine dude

If there was a 1% chance of fucking things up, there’s no way I’d give it a go, so my opinion is to wait for the AMD card to arrive.
