The WD Black SN770 is a great PCIe 4.0 drive that actually trades blows with the 980 Pro (see review below). It's currently on sale for €78.99 everywhere in Europe from what I can tell, which is a good deal. I just ordered one myself too. Below are some reviews that should give an idea of the capabilities of this drive.

WD stepped it up with their recent NVMEs, or Samsung dropped the ball with the 980-series in general. Probably both.

I was reading the title and went “that’s not really cheap for a 1TB hard drive” then I realised that WD makes SSDs since they bought SanDisk quite some years ago 🙈

Agreed, I'll never forget the Tom's Hardware review for it because its "A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" title stands out and has been updated about a month and a half ago. The only thing it lacks is DRAM cache but at least it utilizes HMB. I would like the 600 TBW endurance rating to be a little higher but that's still plenty of lifespan for meticulous sporadic users.

€78.99 is a steal! Unfortunately when I change the country from Germany to my country, USA, the price remains $100 USD. It did hit $80 back in mid October so hopefully it'll do the same here during Black Friday/Cyber Monday.

The 1 TB MSI SPATIUM M470 is our current alternative at $90($80 after $10 MIR) on Newegg. This drive does have DDR4 DRAM cache and a much higher 1,600 TBW endurance rating but its random read/write is a tad slower than the SN770 at 600,000/600,000 IOPS. The difference really won't be noticed.
