Hi everyone!

I'm going to be building a PSP laptop concept to try and get me into programming and moding. it will be cheap and tricky

okay so here's the plan:

aquire PSP 1000

for those of you who dont know, this is the first gen of psp realeased and having owned all of them exept the 3000, i like it the best.

buy more memory

psp 1000 comes with a pathetic 32mb stick of memory.

post-2787-0-09625800-1368095389_thumb.jp

Which is fine for saving games ect... but i want to take advantage of the PlayStation store and other downloadable content. So instead of buying one of those expensive PSP memory cards i have found an elegant solution.

buy this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dual-Micro-Card-Adapter-Slot/dp/B001RPEJA4/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1368093721&sr=1-5&keywords=psp+memory+adapter

and this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-16GB-microSDHC-Memory-Card/dp/B002NTP06K/ref=pd_sim_ce_7

a fraction of the price and just as good, and with expand-ability!

install custom firmware

don't worry I'm not doing anything illegal. i need it for something later on

do hardware mods

here is a top compartment i have made from an old PSP stereo with some basic soldering.

post-2787-0-65149100-1368095294_thumb.jp

it is also expandable and contactableas shown here

post-2787-0-64954200-1368095850_thumb.jp

here's what it will look like on the PSP when it is closed. Need to work out some kind of hinge mechanism, if you guys could help that would be awesome! :)

post-2787-0-61615000-1368096103_thumb.jp

i just soldered the speaker wires to the motherboard and get rid of the crumby stock ones :)

and here is a cut slit in the front plate that the ribbon cable for the screen will run though

acquire an Xbox 360 chatpad and psp headphones

a few years ago a guy called jean worked on the open keyboard project. you can take a look at it here

http://forums.ps2dev.org/viewtopic.php?t=9804&start=0&sid=acaca78e2ba0bba73e4382e7330afe07

the guy is a genius and i will be implementing it in my mods :)

acquire a pic-kit 2 programmer

i don't have this yet, the project is proving a little expensive :/ however this is what i shall do with it

http://hacking4civilians.wordpress.com/tag/psp-chatpad/

this is why i need the custom firmware :/

get in touch with jean!

unfortunately the links to the chatpad pic codes that he created have been broken so i found his YouTube channel and stared trying to get his attention

http://gyazo.com/29fcf077ebb5e491108fb3cc78c2e9f0

eventually it worked and he put them up on his site, however he will not be taking any more questions or spending anymore time on this so please don't bother him!

flash codes and see if it works :/

unfortunately stuff is still in the mail but when i get the time i'll post back with my results :D

sorry about my bad camera, its just from my phone :/ thanks for reading! TTFN!

P.S. please leave comments :)

nice job! if you can, try post pics without a big light source in the corner, it'll make it easier to get your plans across!

UPDATE TIME!

There is some good news, but mostly bad. Really disappointed with the progress of recent but lets start with the good news!

1.) My SD card arrived! as did my adapter! it has been one of my better ideas! i now have 16Gb of storage and still one slot left if i ever need to expand :)

MJiy8rA.jpg

2.) Seeing as i have some memory to play with i have already installed custom firmware (CFW) onto my device. no hiccups there, cant wait to mess around with that!

and now the bad news!

1.) My replacement screen has a major problem with the colors! the whites are yellow, the greys are green ect... after spending hours trying to find a CFW program that would allow me to adjust color settings i decided i would need to try and get my money back

2.) the chatpad i ordered came... well... kinda... what i received was not a chatpad. it was a rip off of it! which i would have been fine with except that the internals  are different therefore the flashing wont work and there is no led back light! here's some pictures. I could tell right away it was a fake!

not the original packaging

ZcvKkEU.jpg

it even says "XBOX 360 CHATPAD" but the internals are so different

Kn5cVJ0.jpg

as i said before, no led backlight

7TvaiDM.jpg

Sorry for this rather depressing update, this had put me in a rather tight spot now. I have very little money left for this! haaha! however it will be completed (i hope)

thanks for reading,

Ross

This is a really interesting project, man! I still have 3 PSPs lying around in various states of functionality - I should probably try to do something with them too.

Can't wait to see how it turns out. Best of luck to you! :)

UPDATE:

so i bought a new chatpad and it came in the post today :) it appears to be a genuine one this time and it seems in working order.

HOWEVER when i looked under the hood I noticed a "revision B" notice, i thought nothing of it and continued until i reached the circuit board. When i reached it i saw this:

qU2dLb4.jpg

upon closer inspection with a magnifying glass the chip said "microsoft X814364-001" where as the original had a chip saying "pic16f883". This means microsoft replaced ti so that users couldnt reflash the chip anymore, which i can understand seeing as i bought a psp for this which is sony technology :L.

Anyway I scanned the board for any other changes and there where none so i ripped of the revision B chip

U2VcZwD.jpg

and i will be replacing it with one on these :)

thanks again guys!
