Getting an RTX 2080 to post without 8+6 pin PCIE?

Here's the deal: I have an RTX 2080 waiting for me at a relative's house overseas. It was bought for a relative bargain in supposedly working condition of a reputable ebay seller who takes returns.

I am going to go get that card very soon, but I won't be able to bring my actual PC for obvious reasons.

The only equipment I will have on hand is a 10 year old dell PC and whatever I can reasonably fit within my only carry-on suitcase.

 

While returns would still be possible otherwise, I'd still like to be able to test the card myself on-site because it would make things much simpler in case of technical problems.

 

The dell PC I mentioned has a PCIE slot. My thought was that I'd plug that card into that PC to test it. The only issue being that it doesn't have any PCIE power connectors.

 

I really only need the card to POST to clear any reasonable doubts. That shouldn't require all that much power, and my thoughts are that the PCIE interface + a molex to PCIE 6pin should easily be able to supply that much power, especially for less than a minute.

My only concern is that it may refuse to boot without a proper set of 8+6pin connectors, but I don't know if it would be an issue or not.

 

Anyone know if such a scheme would work? Or any other potential ideas?

The card will not POST if you do not populate every power connector.

 

But there's a chance that it will print a message on screen to instruct you to plug in the rest of the power connectors. Though I haven't personally seen a card do that since like 2008 (because I've always plugged in all the power cables since then).
